Greetings, willing to make some new friends in the area

Hello there,
By a total accident I stumbled across this forum and was dazzled with all the topics and pictures. I'm quite new to growing hippeastrum, since it's the beginning of my first year, although I had loved these flowers since I was a child. And now I'm so obsessed I can't spend a day without giving them at least half an hour of my time and doing research online, and checking the bulbs for their health and progress.

It might be silly to say but I already have a small collection on my window. First is was hippeastrum Picotee bought on a market day just after Christmas, poor thing was there in the cold since early hours. It took a bit of time for it to show any signs of growth but right now it's beautiful emerald foliage catches attention, and two flower steams growing when I'm not looking! Also there are hippeastrum Minerva, which already has a nice big flower steam coming out. Hippeastrum Nanago, Rilona, Temptation, Flamenco Queen, Matternhorn, and Apple blossom. All of these come from our Uk seller Gardens4you which I love! The only exception is Apple blossom which came from RoyalColours and I'm a bit disappointed as the bulbs were small, dried up. Not showing any signs of life after two weeks. Gardens4you surprised me greatly as many bulbs although described as 26/28 came as lovely big 33! Now that's something I'd like to happen all the time. I'd love to make some great acquaintances here, with people with more knowledge and experience, and also just to talk and have fun while carrying for those beautiful plants.

We're always eager to have new members and we look forward to seeing your blooms in the near future. Sounds like you have a great little collection going for you already!

I agree with Donna, it sounds like you have a wonderful collection started. You are so right, the hippeastrum flowers are very beautiful and there are so many different colors and forms that you have to look forward to in growing your garden.

Well, my tulips have just opened, finally!!! I live in a small town in central montana. Not even a stop light in town. I like it! I work for a steel manufacturer that makes steel cooking griddles. so I run the equipment, do sales, and the packaging. My husband and I just got married 4 years ago. I moved to the larger city where he lived, till my dad was diagnosed with cancer then we did the mad dash to fix and sell the house and move back to my old town. We got to spend a month with dad before he pased. We've been here 9 months now and have moved twice. When my rental came empty it was an absolute disaster! So.....from Nov on we did nothing but work on the house. Since we were doing so much work we decided to fix it nice and move into it-- about 1/2 acre of yard nice views but an ugly yard with nothing in it. I am in zone 4 and in on the plains so the biggest problem I have is the constant wind here in the winter, it seems to kill everything! OH, and the alkaline soil sucks too! I like Iris, peonies and daylilies they do well here as well as most clematis. Poppies are my favorite. At this time I think I have at least 20 varieties. I have been trading like crazy and I recognize a few people I have already traded with. Hello to poisondartfrog,seashellpcola, and amyinms!!! Thank you so much, everyone! I had so much fun making that cake and all the sheets, but it was a lot of work, and I would think twice about offering to do anything on that scale again! Tracy - the flowers and bow were fondant. I was going to make everything out of chocolate melts, but everything was coming out lumpy, and I didn't have time to work with it, so I tried fondant for the first time. What an easy thing to work with! I was pleasantly surprised! The only real problem I had was that I used sheet cake pans from two different comapanies - it appears their rulers are not the same! The Wilton 15" x 12" x 2" was a good 1" bigger than the cheaper ones I bought - so we had some beveled sheet cakes! Weird, but it worked! Just put a smaller layer on top of the larger! The spa day was fun! My feet were halfway soft for a while! Now they are back to normal - time to start taking care of my feet a little better, I guess! The only problem with the day is that things weren't going well at home or for my husband with our business, so I got constant phone calls while we were there and all the way home, so it wasn't the most relaxing day! But, such a wonderful treat from my sister! She was the most beautiful bride I have ever seen - can't wait to show you all a picture (of course, I am a bit predjudiced!) Okay, for the peony - I cut all the foliage off, as it all looked bad - same for the peony I had several feet away - looking the same way. I cut them both to the ground. The stems looked bad and everything. So... do I need to dig them up? Or should they grow back okay next year? Thanks so much for all the help, girls!

lol Rocky ya hit it right on the nail girlie girl. Of course its always going to be hot and humid and rainy and cold (much like houston weather), I do love new orleans but not downtown, I love the outskirts and on the other side of the Ponchatrain (sp) and ya have to understand I am the person that says God should just drop LA in the ocean cause of I-10, nothing pretty on that road at all!!! (ok, just cause my name is Katrina it doesn't mean that I wished that storm on New Orleans). But there are some very beautiful parks, houses, plantations, bed and breakfasts, etc there. I was there for a week in June and plan to go back. I stayed in Albita Springs, about maybe 30 mins from New Orleans, just across the causeway. Other than that I think New Orleans well its nasty! There is alot of work there for architects though, they still have alot of the storm damage and they do have some very beautiful buildings downtown. As far as the fried southern food hmmm ya better get used to spicy cajun food lol. Rox ya didn't mention the swamps lol, that is one place I'd hate to make enemies in thats forsure, they'd never find ya if ya went missing! Christmas is a neat time to go and look although like Rox says, its cold and rainy in the winter and very steamy in the summer. Fishy, I am giggling at the magnetic locks, those must be pretty funny to watch adults try to get into! April! I am so sorry, I didn't congratulate you on your new walking baby! Congratulations! That is great news! Well, except for you needing her to sit still right now, lol! Letha, Mmmmmm, cookie dough body butter, sounds really yummy. Careful now, those little men may try to take a bite out of you! No big plans for me this weekend. My girlfriend might be coming over to visit tomorrow night. Both of us are so busy anymore it is hard to find time to get together like we used to. Might take the kids to see B Movie on Sunday. Medo, I have been wanting to have a greenhouse ever since I saw Ed's cousin's. He built one for his wife. He's an electrician and installed the mechanical windows that are hooked up to the thermostat. Installed a sprinkler system and tons of racks. It attaches to their family room by sliding glass doors and she can just step right in from the house. Her garden is amazing! She has the most gorgeous yard. They have giant pampas grass, elephant ears, a pond, arbors, gorgeous perennials. Absolutely beautiful. She is able to start her plants so early in the greenhouse and they are so big and healthy come spring. Lucky duck!

Be sure and post photos of your lovely blooms when you can. It's that time of year when there are plenty if blooms in the house, greenhouse, and/or garden.

Good morning!

Thank you very much it's so kind of you!

For now I can only share the pictures of growing flower steams, which still are lovely on their own.
I don't have any doubles, I saw a lot of the to buy online but... I don't really like them. They just look messy and lack the grease of the pure hippeastrum.

Tomorrow I will have 4 more bulbs delivered by post, Red Lion, Stargazer, Orange Sovereign, and a another Nagato bulb as I love the colouring.

The garden centre is very supportive, as my first Nagato suffered a bit in transportation, the bulb was very big but soft with bruising and red odd spots. Two weeks after planting its still dormant although other bulbs planted in the same time are showing leaves. The contact in the garden centre assured me that if nothing happens they will gladly send me a new one. How nice of them :)

Rilona, Flamenco Queen and Matternhorn are slowly showing leaves and some flower steams are pointing out.
How silly exciting it is :)

Hi Rob,

Hopefully we can change your mind about doubles.. there are a few that are must haves, Alfresco (extremely full and extremely fragrant) and Dancing Queen and the original Nymph just might change your mind!

Yep, you are addicted. I plant mine in the garden after they bloom, it`s very warm where I live,and right now they are all starting to bloom.

Write to Royal colors about the dried up bulb, they are very good about replacing things. And sign up for their e-mails and like them on Facebook. On occassion they have exclusive offers or discounts and it`s best to know about those right away lol!

Uh Alfresco does look so nice!
