My first WS bloom - Purple Poppy

I really love the color, but it's kind of dinky, just under an inch, thought they would be larger. Do you think they will get larger if they self seed? I had them pretty densely packed in the jug. I went around to the east side to check my lilies, and by the time I came back, the poppy had turned to follow the sun that had just started shining on that bed.

The link is where I got the seeds. Theirs look a little bigger to me, but it seems to have bloomed true colorwise.

VERY pretty! The link says they are peony poppies - perhaps when more bloom they'll be bigger and have more of the peony form.

That's my guess, anyway ........

My ws poppies from a trade look just like this one. I don't think this is the peony type. The peony ones are much fuller and ruffled. I have the pinks ones.

I got store bought seeds. Last year. I sowed directly into 2 hanging baskets on 22 march. I taped plastic wrap on top on the baskets. Right when I had sproutage, I got the hangar hook hooked on my clothes and dumped both pots. After cursing loudly, I did my best to put the soil back in the pots then moved both pots to the hangar hooks on the sides of my clothesline. Around 1 may I removed the plastic wrap. In the past I have bought nasturtiums at the garden center but have had lousy luck transplanting. This was my 1st year ws'ing. So it was an experiment. A successful one!

Yes, I do want to do some summer sowing too. Problem is we are going out of town for two weeks as soon as the kids are out of school and we get no rain in summer in CA and we don't have sprinklers. :( So no starting containers until we get back in July. But I might try a few then, but not too much, cuz you know, July! Also, I have been starting seeds in newspaper pots in my garage window sill. I was just hoping to get wsing to work so I could do MORE at a time, lol. But I'm having some success with the newspaper pots too and will have some other pretty blooms, so you guys don't think I'm too pitiful. lol I'll post some pics as it all comes along. I'm learning slowly but surely. I'm definatley hooked on the gardening thing now, it's just a matter of finding what works best for me and my climate and my penny-pinching ways. ;) Thanks for letting me join in though, I love reading here and all the info and ideas and gorgeous motivating pics!

Maggie, Petunias usually aren't, but this seems to be a bad year for them for some of us. I usually have so many of them I'm chucking them out by mid-July. This year, I'm still waiting for the ones that did sprout to GROW! Two of my seedlings area about two inches tall. The other four aren't even an inch tall...their inky-dinky little things, the size of a pinch. I planted them out anyway, hoping they will take to the ground and take off. Strange year for Petunias. multilily, do you have a photo of yours and are they smallish?

pvick, thanks and it said the originals before they self seeded were the peony type. Maybe some of these will show up more double, but the photo at the link all look single and larger.

One site said to ease up on the water when they start blooming for the somniferum type. That might be a problem with the hottest days coming up & other plants in that bed, first summer for most and it's a hot spot even if it gets a little shade early am and part of the day.

I hope Becky daisy will bloom w/them, has buds now, but she was new last fall and tends to wilt in the hot afternoon sun so I turn on the soaker hose just for a little while.

I'm really happy with it regardless.

Yes, the peony are much more peony like, but it sure is pretty!

So far none of the self-sown ones have come back purple...they were my favorites!

Now that is one GORGEOUS poppy - so beautiful - I bet you go out everyday and just look at it in awe... really pretty.

Arrrghhh. Haven't seen too many poppies around, but they could get cross pollinated anyway. All I need is for it to cross (or revert) with an orange one! But that lily place, they harvest the seeds; so far they seem consistent. Maybe yours were harvested from a garden where there are other poppies? If they don't self seed true, I'll keep buying these as long as they offer them. They do give you a lot, could have filled 6 jugs with them rather than the 3.

I'm fascinated with crosses, but don't want these to.

I was watching the buds, but thought it would be a few more days yet. Once they raise their heads, they open fast. Sure made my day when I went out this morning to check if my seedlings needed water and saw that.

I may have a few more WS flowering later on, some probably won't this year, but I mainly grow roses, and most everything else is for companion plants or accents but not all. There's only one rose in that bed, and they will never bloom at the same time.

Stuck out a bunch of true blue alliums in front last fall. They sure bloom for a long time, are getting a little ratty now.

I planted some coreopsis from a previous year's pack of 25-cent seeds about 3 years ago. They were singles, and I was disappointed. Now this year most are beautiful doubles and really look nice with the roses, should mark those plants and save the seeds from them. But they may not come true either.

Maybe I will divide them because the yellow would look pretty with the poppies if they come back.

Gotta get some chores done and more problems to solve! Thanks much for the feedback.
