Tee Hee.....first ws Petunia bloom!!!

It's about time! Funny thing is the ones I've been watching everyday aren't the ones blooming LOL! This baby still only about 2" tall and half as wide I forgot was even there and sure enough I spotted a long purple un-opened flower when I was walking by to hang out clothes!! Ha!

I have a bloom on one of mine, but I pinched it off today. The darn plant is so tiny, I hate to make it work so hard, putting out a bloom. They say, "don't despise small beginnings"...so I won't.
The Petunias that self-sowed in my back yard are doing good-- leaves are a bit yellow, but they are blooming. But I buried the reseeders around my light pole while trying to fill in dirt my dog kept kicking out (it has been a never ending battle with her and the cats this year). So the bounty I'd usually have of reseeders are a no-go this year, so far. I wanted new colors anyway. I may have to break the bank and go buy a flat or two.

Congrats, Vera!

My one, lone, now three-month old seedling is still alive and growing, but oh-so-slowly! It's not even thinking about blooming. This is it yesterday:

Looked at it tonight when I got home, and it seems to have grown a bit more! Or maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part....

My faves...... *Nicotiana alata (common evening flowering white) *Datura inoxia *Matthiola incana (started blooming in 90+ degree temps!) *Clarkia elegans (Clarkia amoena does not have a fragrance) *Lilac *Blue Elderberry (Sambucus mexicana).....Native to Eastern WA. I'm scoping out seeds around the corner from me...empty lot. It's a matter of getting them before the birds do though LOL! They are still in flower and smells soooo heavenly :O *Common Milkweed (give it it's own area!) I've been yanking out runners this year 15' away from the mother plant...runners didn't start until year 4! *Phlox paniculata As far as foul smelling: *Pelargonium x hortorum *Ginkgo biloba....steer clear of females; their fruit are extremely foul smelling!! *Ligustrum obtusifolium (Privet) *Juniper (I think it smells of cat urine) Of course most herbs, however there is no smell until leaves or flowers(of some) are crushed,rubbed, etc. Some people think Catmint smells like cat urine. Not sure which Nepeta they have, but mine sure smells much more pleasant than that LOL!

I grew them last year and had that "not enough wow" experience in the garden bed too. I thought that maybe they were not getting enough sun. This year I decided to plant them in a big barrel in full sun with some Yvones Salvia, purple verbena, a big dahlia (unknown color yet) and white petunias. It looks much, much better in the barrel, is kind of popping through the other flowers. I like it a lot better. So for those you you who will end up with it next year cause you can't stand the seed to go to waste (take one to know one!) try it in a big planter with other fuller plants.

I've been leaving some of my plants outside overnight for the last week. They are still looking fine. I do put them in my 4 shelf greenhouse and close the cover overnight. My tomatoes and peppers come in for the night though. As this is my first year starting flowers, I found that some of them aren't up to my standards as great one to grow myself. My godietia are pretty puny. My gazinia and Osteospermum are small . But I probably should of started them sooner. Lobeia, Morning Glory, Cobea, Dianthisis,and Wave Petunias have really tooken off. These ones I will be growing again. I started 4 kinds of peppers and 4 kinds of tomatoes as well. They are all doing great with the exception of my Manitoba Tomatoes. This could of been my fault. Maybe I left them outside a little too long when I first started hardening them off. What has been your best and worst plants to grow this year?

Okay. I'm confused. Are petunias suppose to be hard to winter sow? I had 1 milk jug & they sprouted & grew like weeds. I transplanted them into a 16" pot & they have been blooming for over a month now. Is it just beginners luck? (hope not!) BTW, the seed was from my own that I collected last fall, & they are pure white.

Petunias usually aren't, but this seems to be a bad year for them for some of us.
I usually have so many of them I'm chucking them out by mid-July. This year, I'm still waiting for the ones that did sprout to GROW! Two of my seedlings area about two inches tall. The other four aren't even an inch tall...their inky-dinky little things, the size of a pinch. I planted them out anyway, hoping they will take to the ground and take off.
Strange year for Petunias.

Maggie - for me , petunias are easy to winter sow - very easy. Always have been. It's just that this year, for whatever reason, I've had rotten luck with them.

Stuff happens.

I have been very successful with Petunia. So much so I had to toss some out yesterday. Most of the seeds were self collected or came from trades. I was afraid they would not germinate so I oversowed them in each container. The seedlings were so puny I thought they would not grow well. I was wrong. Their root system was very well developed despite their small stature. They took off like gangbusters.

Mine took off like gangbusters, too, like Pitam's & Maggie's. We're all near each other (Chicago & Indy & Indiana) so maybe it's the weather. I planted mine out at the 2 leaf stage and they were as big around as a quarter. Very small!

Ohhh. How pretty, lime. I love the combo. Would you please save me seeds of that petunia? I love purple/blue petunia. Mine is Laura Bush. Very veriable in colors, but very robust plants. The flowers are smaller than store bought petunias. This pic was just taken this evening:

Yeah really! Green with envy LOL!
Mine are seeds saved from Petunia 'Ultra Burgundy' and so far my one and only little bloom has come true; no telling what the other petunia babies will look like :O
