Need a large bush/tree by corner of the house
Comments (5)There are many viburnum that will give you some spring color(not bold, but pretty), then greenery, then fall color. They can be trimmed to shape and don't get too tall, but check with a garden center to see if they work in your conditions....See Moresmall tree or large shrub for corner of house
Comments (8)Depends on what you want. I happen to LOVE Amelanchier, but it is no way as showy with the flower display of the crepe/crape? myrtle. On the other hand, Amelanchier looks great in the fall and has cool berries that attract birds, so maybe a little more "3 season" interest. In my experience, the best thing to do when trying to decide about plant selection is to think about the plant and how it will perform all year around, so take into account not only it's showy features but its winter silhouette, form, maintenance, etc. I love both Amelanchier and Crape Myrtle. The myrtle has a long, showy bloom season but is ho hum the rest of the time. Amelanchier is nice most of the time, nothing spectacular at any particular time, but nice overall. To me the virbirnum are a total bore in the winter and when not in bloom or berry, but nice when in bloom and again in fall with foliage and berries. So it depends on how this plant will fit in with whatever else is going on in your garden....See Moredo you recommend any tall skinny trees for close to the house?
Comments (8)How about a bamboo grove. There are many kinds of bamboo but the tropical type is a good choice because doesn't "run", it stays in a clump. Within the tropical bamboo family you can choose types that have leaves on their lower branches (sounds like what you want) other types have the leaves at the top only. In your zone you should have a lot of suitable tropical bamboo choices. The reason I have begun adding bamboo to my garden is to block the ugly side of the house next door and I don't have a lot of room to do so with trees which could be a problem in hurricanes. Good luck. P.S. It isn't cheap. If the price is low it probably is the running type because it grows really fast. The tropical kind grows slower and is more difficult to propagate so more expensive....See MoreFlowering tree for the corner of my home near foundation
Comments (36)I've never seen a Japanese snowdrop tree with the giraffe bark of Japanese stewartia. I have seen a Japanese snowdrop tree that was 49' tall during 1990 in USDA 8. I've also seen a 31' tall Kousa dogwood that had an average crown spread of 48 1/2'. And had been planted at the corner of a parks department visitor center, so that the resulting effect was of a lop sided half tree - I think for your small scale situation you should avoid most choices that tend to be referred to as trees, go for something decidedly shrubby instead....See Moreterrene
