A different method of prep bed for azeales

Has anyone tried this method - http://www.dirtdoctor.com/view_question.php?id=167

I find it intriguing. I guess we don't really need to provide acidic soil as long as we keep up with microbes population to provide nutrients. Soils rich in microbes tend to be neutral in pH anyway. One thing i dont get is using peat moss. That stuff is totally dead. Anti microbial and everything. Takes forever to break down. Why use it for azeales? I don't recall my dad ever using that stuff at all. He used compost which is thriving with microbes ALL THE TIME to topdress as needed and the azeleas grew just fine, as tall as 6 feet tall.

I suppose it's ok to use apple cider vinegar (1TBS per gallon of water) occasionally to offset akaline tap water if we don't get much rainfall. Pine leaves or pine barks as mulch would work fine. I would stay away from peat moss. That's the same stuff that used to preserve fish or other meat to keep them from rotting.
