chinese flame tree shedding bark

Hi,

I've been noticing for about 8 months now that my BIG chinese flame tree (Koelreuteria bipinnata) has been "shedding" it's bark, starting from the ground and moving up. The pieces are think, some almost 1/4" thick. It appears that almost every piece I pull off has a bit of spider web, bug droppings are some other evidence of insect life under it. I don't know if this is the cause or if they are just using the peeling bark as a home.

It doesn't look natural or good, I'm worried about my tree.

Here are some photos:

I'd like to know if this is normal and whether or not I need to worry. Any advice will be greatly appreciated, I REALLY love this tree!
