Dump day - mixed feelings

Today was the day for dumping the jugs that didn't germinate. Sad in a way, but also a relief since I can just forget them now. No worrying and fretting and no more watering. I was sad that I didn't get any cleome or bonfire salvia, but I'll try again next year. Almost everything else came up so I guess it's not too bad to lose a couple.

That day is very close for me too. All that is left to plant out now, are some sunflowers and basils, and one jug of snapdragons that still doesn't have it's first set of true leaves. Well, there's also a few tomato plants that are waiting to go to their new home ... the neighbor's garden. Other than that it's just ungerminated containers, and really not that many this year. The only ones that I'm sad to dump are the tomatoes. There was a couple that I was really looking forward to trying that just didn't germinate, but the rest of the containers are annuals that I can live without.

June 1st was going to be my dump day, but a week ago I decided enough was enough. I dumped 6 soda bottle containers that had nothing. I will never again use soda bottles. Of 8 soda bottles only 2 came up - morning glory and one moon vine.

In my one-gallon water containers everything sprouted. I don't understand. Both got treated equally. I know plenty of people have great success with soda bottles.

One of the soda bottle seeds was clematis or hibiscus which someone told me may take 2 yrs to germinate. woof! I wouldn't even have planted it if I knew that.

Anyway, yes to me too it is a relief to concentrate now on what is growing in the garden, where everything is doing great!

Hello Sue, How nice to hear from you. I haven't posted for a while. Don't give up on your plants, even though I'm disappointed that the first two haven't come true to their supposed names,last years was a superb rosy red with yellow middle. The new one to open this year was supposed to be Chiang Mae rainbow but is very much like Celadine my old plumeria but with a different sweeter lemony smell. Also it doesn't hold it's blooms like Celadine. I definately won't be buying any more as I've quite a lot. I bet my home grown seedlings have more exciting colours that's if the seeds were of the varieties given!If I can wait that long! They are around 4 years old now. Hang in there Sue! Hi, If you are working with an architect and the architect has built homes in the area, then he would know the building costs. If he has not done many houses in your area, then he could be way off on the building costs. I built in New York, and hired one of the worlds best architects, my brother. If you go to Hong Kong, and look at the Shopping Area there, he designed it all and surpervised its constrution. At the time he worked for Foster Associates, headed by Sir Norman Foster. He has also worked for James Stirling in the U.K. He designed for me a house, but in the end I could not afford to build it. It was 2 x over budget. Why because the techniques used were "non-standard" it was a modern home and most builders were frankly scared of the project. So a few came in cost-plus, or at very high numbers. I still think by brother did a great job, and we are none the worse for it. It was fun also and if you are in need of a good engineer, I worked with one in Connecticut and recommend him too. We had a good team, just had no idea of local costs. So after three years, and $US 50,000 I was back to square one. We hired a local architect with experience in home building in the area. We build a "standard" home with standard techniques. The house came in over budget, it always does. However the bids were much closer. To give you some idea one builder was 20% below, and another 100% above. The other six were about the middle. Our architect knew all the builders and their histories. e.g. one GC had been through a divorce, needed work, and he bid real low. Our architect said avoid him. Others build for Martha Stewart, they were expensive, but were at the highest quality. In the end we stuck to the middle of the pack. Note if a GC or builder really wants to rip you off, there are always ways he can hide it. You need to trust your builder, and he needs to trust you. We moved in about three years ago now and our GC and builder was very good. Sure we had problems, but in the end it worked out. My recomendation is to do the following: 1) Figure out which bits cost what. Rough is O.K. Doing this will probablly get you a better idea of where possible cost savings are. If one part is a major cost component, that is where you can get the most gains. 2) Simplify the design. A square house of two levels upstairs and downstairs gives you the most bang for the buck. Yech that looks bad. Not to worry this is just the ideal goal. Maybe you can change some of your design a bit to bring it more in line. Get rid of all the doormers, the indents here gables there. 3) Do you have site specific costs which are blowing your budget. E.g. rock. I needed to blast and move rock. That was expensive. Are you siteing your house in the correct place. Maybe moving where you place your house will save on your foundation. 4) If you have an architect ask what he thinks. You have to be brutal sometimes. See this wing here, cut it out removing 1,000 sq feet. Dump the basement have a crawl space. I think if you budget for about $US 250 per square foot, then you will be O.K. Obviously this will vary across the US. But if you are way off this quick check then I think you will have issues later. Way off means at a minimum $US 170 per sq foot. Much below that for a custom one off house, I think is not a good start. 5) In your plans make them detailed as possible. However ask your architect for a pricing schedule for tile, and finishes. E.G. Hard Wood floors, schedule for $US 10 installed per sq foot. Lighting fixtures schedule for $US 6,000. These are no more than guesses at what you will spend, but at least they are accounted for in your budget and will lower the surprises later. There are always budget surprises, that is the nature of the beast. Just fewer surprises. Again be brutally realistic on these numbers. The advantage of schedules is that it removes these unknowns from the builders estimates, hence the estimate is easier for the GC and more accurate, and hence more competative. 5b) Get prices for house options. E.G. unfinished bonus room, you can finish later. West wing section [$US 80,000]. Porch [$US 20,000]. That way if the bids come in high, you can lop off chunks of house, brutal I know. Or have unfinished sections that you can finish later when funds allow. But at least your patient is still alive. 6) Bid out your design to a few builders. In the end I had eight builders bidding. If you are still off on your budget then it is redesign and regroup time. Good luck. All the best, Mike.

I'm sorry for your loss, taigen. I, too, can relate. My first wife loved Christmas. She would be as giddy as a little kid during the holidays. We were married on the 27th of December because the church was so beautiful with all the decorations. 16 years later our Christmas celebration was in a hospital room as Mary fought ovarian cancer. I don't care if the world knows I'm married, although I don't have a problem with it either. But I would love to tell the world how lucky I feel to have found such a great loving relationship! I'm not super caught-up in the symbolism of a ring, but I don't have a problem with it either. I like symbolism if I get to make it my own. That's what I'm kind-of looking for in a ring, something that speaks to both of us. SO is really the sticking point sometimes. He is very picky, very particular, very negative about a lot of things. He searches and searches for just the right thing to purchase. Drives me nuts sometimes. On the one hand. On the other hand . . . he found me!!! Edited to add that I had a serious talk with SO about the fact that I loved the hand crafted ring with the gold leaves, loved the natural style of it and could see myself wearing it all the time. He had to admit that he was conservative and traditional and just didn't like it. He said that he would be fine with my getting it if I liked it, but I said, no, we can find something we both like. So one down, couple more to go . . .

I did that my first year - can't remember what the seeds were - after a couple of weeks of rain - all of a sudden there were sprouts - I think it was perilla - anyway - you never know - keep an eye open on the "dumps"...

Everything was seed rec'd in trades this past year except Clarkia, Cucumber, Kale and Statice. The Abelmoschus was from 2007-8 trades.
What a big disappointment this year has been...it has NEVER been this ugly before...a first for everything aye? I may be dumping out more if they don't ship up soon! Now I'm waiting on my very last sown containers between 5/6-5/20. As of yesterday evening finally spotted germination in the African Daisy 'African Moon' and this morning in the Bat-faced Cuphea! The biggest disappointment of all was the VERY low rate of germination from the Zinnia...so far it's zero for 2 different Profussion Zinnia rec'd in trade...ugh!!

So sad to dump those. I had to dump several containers of petunia seeds that never did a thing. I was sad cause they were supposed to be a pretty blue color. Oh well... Maybe the dump site will surprise me and sprout some of those.

It was nice not to worry about watering containers. Now I focus on watering all the WS babies that made it.

Tomorrow is dump day...Some things, like monkshood, just never came up. Sigh. Thankfully, though, lots of my WS plants made it (some did quite will in the 2-liter soda bottles, btw, like zinnia, roma tomatoes, and feverfew). Ah well. Try again next year, right?

I dumped today also.
Out of OVER 200 containers,i had about 30 that did nothing,5 of them were hosta seed,i was very disappointed about one of the flats, because i bought special seed form the hosta auction,paid a lot for them to, they got dumped today.
I have a neat little area of about 50 flates that i need to get in the ground, this week, and i will be done.

I think the thing i am most excited about is all my veggie plants that came up,to see them in their nice big pots, and know i planted them from seed, is so satisfying to me.Seed that i received from so many of you.Thank you so much.We will be eatin good in the neighborhood!

Dumped some valuseeds.com double datura. Everything else germinated. I didn't grow too much, so it was not a big deal.

I was wondering about "dump day".

I had a container sprout months and months ago and then I let it cook. I was wondering how long I let the dirt just sit. All of a sudden, the jugs I was questioning started sprouting.

Granted, it could be all weeds, but I have sprouts...

This is so addicting, I keep ordering more seeds and "summer" sowing...AND I admit that I am finally running out of room!! But I keep finding "must haves"...

Yep, it was mixed feelings but I like my nice clean deck now. I was also disappointed at all the non-sprouted jugs, esp veggies. I won't try veggies again but learned a lot this year and definately will try flowers again. Don't think I'll try them as early though...started in January. Might have been smarter to wait. NO ZINNIA'S sprouted AT ALL. Weird...just like Vera. Oh, well, lots learned and much fun had!
