At what point do they earn a new name?

I tried the search form but didn't find anything. Have there been any discussion on when a new name can be given to an amaryllis? I know there's lots of people who name their crosses by saying "____ x ____" but at what point do they finally get a name to differentiate them from the others?

AFAIK this matter is yet to be discussed. On the other hand, everybody is entitled to baptize their Creations ad libitum.
When I do so, then I provide the auditory with the respective information
PapDon1 and PapDon2 is H.papilio x "Donau"
PapDonAmb(1,2,3,4,5) is 5 respective siblings of H.papilio x ("Donau" x "Ambiance") and so forth.

You can name your plants whatever you want, whenever you want.. I would wait till their maiden bloom to name them accordingly.

Yes, I did mean the physical difficulties of a GD X Chi breeding. From what you say there is already a partial incompatibility in that a female Chi would require a C-section to give birth. I am sure a male Chi is willing but I don't know about the mechanics of such a small dog mounting a GD. Is that a common phenomena round your parts? :) You seem to think that somehow the breeders don't catch such instances. In that case, do such crosses end up being registered with the AKC as Chi's or GDs? I don't think your Mutt argument holds water. Most snakes are common garters but that doesn't mean other snake species don't exist that can cross breed with them. So it is not material whether most dogs are mutts or whether most mutts choose their own mates. It could still be that pruebreds could qualify as species even if there was enourmouse one-way genetic flow from purebreds to mutts. If breeders are indeed keeping their breeds genetically isolated then that is a isolation mechanism same as any other. Whether that is true or not I have no idea. Seems to me that for the most part it is true. They even keep registries of who the parents are. Whether Mutts are more healthy is also not material to my argument. Cheetahs are genetically inbred and not very vigourous but they still qualify as a species. Also note that inbreeding in and of itself is not the cause of genetic disease. The only thing inbreeding does is expose harmful recessives to natural selection. There are species which inbreed early and often which do not have problems (in particular termites). It is the fact that most species do not inbreed that allows harmful recessive genes to be prevalent in the gene pool. Breeders could weed these recessives out but they don't for financial reasons. It's expensive. Inbreeding can be a problem if one has a small pool of individuals and they become so genetically similar that there is no variation in their immune defenses. Thus a germ that is exposed to the selective pressure of getting around a single individuals immune system automatically has the correct attack strategy for the next individual it infects. This is one reason why "clone armies" are unrealistic. Even if you had a very healthy person to clone a germ would eventually arise that would decimate your army. Plant enthusiasts have already experienced exactly this type of situation. Monoclone fields can be more prone to communicable diseases. One named variety may have had it's defenses breeched and may be more prone to certain diseases than other named varieties. Especially when the named variety is vegitatively propagated.

So after incentives, the solar hot water is about $3k on the new house. Last house there was an additional utility incentive and price was less so it was about $1500. At that price, even with NG availability, payback is 5 year range. New house is all electric so payback is still less than 10 years. My payback goals are 15-20 years. Solar PV is right about there - I just don't have a great roof for it. We may get a group buy where the goal is 10 year payback and even with my east roof, it maybe worth it. ES certification with blower door test does not have a requirement for smoke test I guess. Maybe if it fails, then it does. For me - I just got the pat on the back. The only problem with that $2k incentive is proof. My current house uses less than 1/2 the energy of code houses but I bet I couldn't prove that before it was done. I will have to check into it but I'm not sure the new house could ever make the cut because of the huge east windows with minimal overhang in a cooling climate. If they don't take those things into consideration, then 50% should be possible and solar hot water would put me over that. The overhangs are limited by things outside of my control - but there are wind issues that also limit overhangs. The governing body counts the overhang as footprint and has significant restrictions. Now an awning can come later....

A cultivar is a plant that has a unique feature that stands out from other plants, and is given a special cultivar name. Here's something to consider, some of that wood is absolutely NOT available today at a cost anyone but the wealthiest home owner could afford. And even if the wood is available, the quality is not the same. The best woods have been taken and regrowing conditions are not the same. This kind of wood will not be seen again, ever. It is so wasteful and cost ineffective to take something of value and downgrade it. Buy a modern home if you don't like woodwork! Plus, a little bit of paint goes a long way. There was a time when dark brown and ebony wood (mahogany, chestnut, walnut, hickory, etc.) and red and dark blue velvet signaled "rich" since those woods and dyes were expensive. To me, white just says, "ubiquitous, mass produced mart store." I mean there was a time when even mass production had the touch of human craftsmanship and rich materials, but we are being conditioned to accept a much cheaper look as being desirable, to continue to feed our throwaway economy. Littlebug hit the nail on the head of why I don't like the stair railing, " The staircase, once a dignified and rich structure of satiny finished wood, now looks as though it's constructed of painted plywood." Because of course, nowdays if you wanted something similar within the budget of the common person, you would have to make it out of painted plywood. This is economics, natural materials are becoming scarcer, so substitutions must be made. So to me, that is even MORE reason not to throw away something so valuable. And to not realize the value of it is sad, very sad. It's one thing to not like that style, fine, you don't have to have it or live with it. It's another thing all together to take something rare and valuable and destroy it, when there are plenty of other options out there.

I expect to name any of my seedlings that I feel are good enough to deserve a name..the rest will get initials and numbers. Of course I would choose something that hasn't been used to the best of my knowledge..but, so far I haven't had the luxury of having to name any of my seedlings.. hopefully by the end of the year....

Oh, sounds good then! hehe. While looking over Iris, it seems that a lot of people name their Iris pretty quickly and I saw that on the Amaryllis forum, people tend to name them as crosses. I wasn't sure what the rules were. I'm not actively looking to name any of mine, of course! Just curious. :)

This is a good question Dragonstone. From my prospective.., Do an extensive web and book search for any other named cultivar which is "identicle" in all ways. The offical process is designed only for large commercial growers through Holland. I use Hans' method for the first few years of blooming until the cross has proven its value and uniqueness. Thus far I have "named" 3. I really feel the proper next step would be to submit accurate discriptions and several photos to the International Bulb Society for publication on their website. Of course there are patents and trademarks. I kinda like the Plumeria Society's process.

You can go to the KAVB site to see what Hippeastrum hybrid names have been registered.

They have an extensive database (I would get close to about 1500) registered names.

When I registered H. Gordie, there was a form to fill out and I submitted 29 photos documenting every aspect of the blooms. There are other details, as you need to follow the bulb for a few years to make sure that it blooms true and you need to characterize the forcing characteristics, etc.

It seems that is not too easy to register. I do not really understand the way to do.
Actually, I am not a commercial grower, I wonder if someone can help me to get this registration form to fill out? Thanks.
