What is killing my seedlings?

I have quite a few marigolds and cosmos that I wintersowed. I've been planting them out. A group of Flagstaff marigolds went out Saturday, as of today, less than 50% are left. The stems are still there, but the tops are gone. Some still have tops, but it almost looks as if they've been snapped in half. Same deal with the cosmos, though not as bad (yet -- knock on wood). I have rich soil that's full of bugs and other critters, any idea what might be doing this, and is there any remedy? My only thought was to let the seedlings get HUGE before planting out, but it's too late for this year. Thanks!
