Dawn redwood and walnut trees

Does anyone have experience growing dawn redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) near walnut trees? Pretty much everything we plant has to be tolerant of the walnut's toxicity (juglone) since we've got so many of them. I love those dawn redwoods.

If no one else chimes in....

I have two dawn redwoods in my yard and a number of walnuts but they are not particularly close together.

The "Ogon" is closest, about 100 feet from the nearest black walnut at the same elevation and 175 feet downhill from three others.

Every fall I mean to run an experiment as folks always ask this question.

Good luck, I dig those Metasequoias also!

I have a Bald Cypress about 25-30 feet from a large walnut. It has survived but never thrived, and hasn't grown very well. I don't know if its the walnut or other issues.

I guess I have one comment -- Dawn Redwood grows so fast, if you plant one and it doesn't do anything in one or two years, you would probably be safe to assume it's the walnut (if all other conditions are right), and could probably move it elsewhere if that were an option.

I just checked the info on the Greenwood nursery site from where I purchased the tree. They claim it was grown in a 3 gallon size pot to its 4-5 foot size, and they had reduced the soil around the rootball to make it less heavy for shipping. They also say it grows well in any wet soil, even to the point of them suggesting for customers to plant it by a stream. If the information they provide is correct then the spring rains should not be causing my tree any problems. Streams can often overflow much deeper than the amount of standing water I have seen, after our heavy rain fall events, around the planting area where my tree is planted. So what could be causing my currently 5' 5" tall single trunked tree to be so sluggish in its attempt to fully recover?

The top of one my bald cypress broke off in hurricane rita, it developed about eight new "leaders" and is about half the height of the others planted at the same time. It does look different and interesting though.

what he said.. but the issues might be adequate sun and water ... planting under huge old tree can make watering a problem is it the yellow one??? being deciduous ... they heave a limited season to process and store energy ... ken
