Leader of Dawn Redwood Tree Dead, Will Tree Be OK

debtro

Last winter's dieback included the terminal leader on a 7' dawn redwood. I finally just cut it off -- it was dead down to the first lateral branches. All branches below are fine. Is this tree a goner over the long haul? Or can I train another branch to become the leader? We really want a tree in this spot -- we lost numerous old trees over the years and now have an open area so if the dawn redwood won't make it long-term, I would replace it. But I will keep it if it's possible to work with it. What do folks think?
