I bet you got a warranty on them too. If you worked in a nursery, you obviously know how to spot pot bound or unhealthy plants so if these are healthy, then that's a steal.

Those are condensed editions.

These are end-of-season-sold-else-thrown-away stock. Hopefully they aren't root-bound and haven't missed too many waterings (altho HD no longer uses staff for nursery stock, so you never know). Worth every penny, but don't get too attached. Like rescue pets.

Just wondering - if a tree is root-bound after taking it out of the pot, can you just loosen the roots manually - or if necessary, trim the roots?

At one time there was a post on this site asking about paperback maples.

Saw a couple ~5 gallon today at a local outlet for 100 dollars each.

Since much stock presented to the public here arrives from the grower already badly deformed below the stem(s), and many retailers do not fertilize what I watch out for instead with fall special items is starvation.

And root rot. Pots sitting on hot pavement in sales yards, in puddles and/or where water is being splashed around all summer are probably rather often infested during this ordeal.

Starved plants are liable to keep sinking after purchase, like the Titanic with its filling compartments apparently unable to bounce back after going beyond a certain point.

The roots being decomposed by pathogenic water molds can be a real inhibitor as well, I am sure.

And any infested stock planted on your place may now serve as infestation points in your beds.

BigBox expect the opposite. Like I said above, you get what you pay for and don't expect too much from this "deal".

Big boxes here have many pots on pavement part or all of the time. And letting stuff dry out and wilt or burn may help water molds invade roots later.

Nice tree. I would have bought one that size if I had the option for that price. The only one I found locally was about $90 and it was a 6' tall tree that was more or less a unbranched whip.

I've got three that size but a year-older. You'll notice next year bark peeling. I just know. I bought 10 or 20 of them from Heritage Seedlings two years ago. Your tree looks exactly like all 10 or 20 I purchased. At any rate, Heritage sells that size plug for 4.95 each. I gave away one to each of my neighbors, gave a few to a guy with an arboretum so he has ammo to trade, etc, etc.

This is a Paperbark I got from a nursery I worked for in 2001... photographed this summer. When it was given to me, it was about 5 feet tall and a single stem no wider than an inch anywhere with a few scattered branches at the top. It would be like your seedling, only taller. I moved from that house so it's no-longer mine.

Today I saw a bunch of potted Acer griseum received (according to the labels) as 5'-6' B & B and 12' bare-rooted priced at $97.50 at one of the "expensive" local independent garden centers.

Hi whaas, nothing but lovvvvve! The soils in that part of Illinois are 3' deep in black loam and then you get to some clay-loam. It's truly the most remarkable soil on earth.
