Is it too early to put out non stop begonias in zone 6?

I have some non stop begonias that were raised in a greenhouse and not even hardened off yet to my knowledge. I have been leaving them in filtered sun all day and then bringing them in the house since Saturday and I was thinking of just planting them in the containers they are going in today. I looked at the 10 day forecast and it is supposed to be cloudy/overcast/showers for the next 7 days and above 50 every night. Now wether it will work out that way or not who knows but...

What do you think, plant or wait?

mine were grown from seed indoor and have been outside for couple of weeks already but our weather while on chilly side never dropped below 40.

Thanks Linda...I guess it will work out ok. I will just have to keep my eye on the overnight temps. I could always run out and dig them up and bring them back in if it gets that cold suddenly....lol.

Yes, IMO it is too early. It can absolutely still frost (we had temps in the 30s a few nights ago, no frost but awfully close...). Also, as mentioned above, a very important consideration is soil temp. If you plant heat-loving annuals into cool soil temps, best thing that can happen is they will sit there and do nothing until the soil temp warm, but what often happens is the plants rot out - and the more spring rain you get, the greater the chance of this happening. Planting in planters that are not exposed (say, on the porch next to the house) would probably be fine if the soil/mix in the planters is warm enough, but even that is iffy (I've had plants rot out on me under these circumstances, too). Personally, I would wait at least another week, DEPENDING ON WEATHER. I haven't even bought any annuals yet, why the heck do I want to buy them and cart them in and out of the house every night. I'm doing that right now with my seed-grown stuff, that's plenty to care for right now. As a side note, last year nurseries around here had a nice selection after Mother's Day. In recent years past, if didn't get teh annuals before Mother's Day, the nurseries would get wiped out, wouldn't have much to choose from. People must have complained to the nurseries I frequent, because there was plenty last year after Mother's Day. That's the way it SHOULD be - no way should places be selling annuals up in my neck of the woods at the end of April...grrr...

Temps are predicted to drop significantly into the teens over the next 3 to 5 days and snow for tomorrow night and Saturday. Only an inch though. Not enough to cover and do much good. But then next week sometime it's supposed to go back up into the 40s again! What a crazy winter! Snow fall amounts are less than half what it was last year at this time and days above freezing are more than twice as many. I watered my roses today! We haven't had any significant precipitation in several weeks and it has been very sunny the last few days so I thought maybe they'd like a drink. I also think they'll fare better in the cold snap if they're well hydrated. I had to lug gallon jugs of water out, ugh! If this weather does keep on like this I'm going to ask his nibbs to hook the hose back up!

Oh my. What is a passionate rose lover like you doing in that glacial hell hole? Reading about your endeavors has exhausted me and I haven't even lifted a shovel. I admire your grit and determination, but would love to see you rewarded with thousands of blooms on your rose bushes for all your hard work. I bet they could use engineers in zones 7 to 10!

they stop blooming when temps get to 80F-85F during the day. perhaps your soil temps are still too low? i found that when they are small it takes them some time to start growing well. they need 65f-70F soil temps to grow well. i think it's easier to grow them in pots to good size before you plant them out. but then in summer they prefer cooler temps, especially at night. 60-65f nite and 70-75F day is best. mine just started dropping all flowers when it got hot . when it got cooler in the fall - then they bloomed again and kept going until it was low 40s at nite. they also set tubers quite nicely: about 1"-1.5". So i kept tubers in pots in soil indoors over winter and then started them up again. they should get much larger when they have tubers. most starter plants that are sold in spring are grown from cuttings and do not have tubers at all. they need sev months of cooler temps (below 62F) to initiate tubers. most people do not bother to overwinter them (in pots in cool temps, but above 40F). but i thought why not try as an experiment? it was quite easy too. very similar to caladiums. however, they can rot very easily if kept cold and damp outdoors in the soil. what are your winter conditions like? and by the way, mine bloomed rather well in the fall without any direct sun on NE balcony - very bright light, but not a ray of sun. Even my Rhizomatous type Begonia has been outdoors in it's container for about a week now :D
Not sure what it's true name is but looks like the one in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th pics on the link below...except mine is much bigger! I started it from one single leaf 1.5 years ago :O
In cooler temps this one will grow thicker leaves....I keep it in the coolest room in the house during winter and it LOVES that. Has adapted pretty well to lower humidity so am giving it a shot outdoors....maybe I'll see flowers this year?

Nice Begonias you have there Vera. Mine are small starter plants that I just purchased. I took a chance and planted them out. I took a look at the 10 day forecast on weather.com and it was showing above 50 every night. The very next day that all changed and now they are forecasting 45 a couple of nights. Do you suppose they will survive it? Or should I be covering them with something at night?

Keeping my fingers crossed.... :-)

My Sinbad is going back out next Wednesday. It was smallish last year when I bought it at HD, put it in a 1 gal pot, then late in the summer it didn't look so good, fed it, put it in a 5 gal pot, brought it in for the winter, fed it some more, give it a little Miracid half strength, not very often, and Osmocote, seems ok for now, don't know much about growing them. They will die here over winter in the ground.

That begonia is huge. I hate to do it, I have one bigger pot size, but can you then cut them back? I guess I don't see why not, it just has such a beautiful form and blooms constantly. The leaves almost look irridescent.

I tried to grow another kind from seed, too tricky, and I doubt they'd be good candidates for WSing.

I don't know the answer to that pm2...this is my first begonia ever...no take that back, I had an Angel Wing cane type, but I don't know too much about them. I bet they would know over on the Begonia forum :D
