Hubby 'weeded' the tomato beds!

I got home from work on Friday and my husband told me that he had noticed a lot of little weeds growing between the tomatoes in the 4x4 boxes we built. So he pulled them all out. He seemed pretty proud that he did a little gardening.

I had just been out there that morning. There weren't any weeds. So what could he have pulled out? I asked if the leaves looked a little like tomato leaves. He said they did, but were a lot smaller. Did they maybe look like marigolds...? He didn't know. Finally, unable to bear not knowing, I went out and checked.

Yep - he 'weeded' the marigolds and tossed them in a neat little pile in the grass next to the tomato beds. By the time I got to them, they were beyond saving.

I didn't want him to feel bad about it. He was so glad to help and I did have some extra marigold plants. So I just laughed and re-planted some new marigolds in the place where he weeded.

Maybe he can just stick to mowing the lawn and grilling the burgers this year... :)

How funny. You were very understanding.

My husband has learned to ask and I've recently started tagging everything so he knows it's "something" and not a weed.

Personnaly I'd use Weed-B-Gone on their unsightly grass, because it will cost you money to hide it if you want to build a raised bed which means bringing in additional soil. Bamboo is very invasive it could be a mistake, because it could take over your garden bed. HD has those concrete blocks that are straight and curved. Any landscaping doesn't have to conform with the norm. You can interject straight with curved lines. Here is a link that might be useful: Propagating Perennials

Thanks, all, for your sweet comments. Vickie, no there are no lights in the globes. The blue one actually has a very large chunk of it missing - my poor hubby was trying to "fix it up" somehow one day (he didn't like the way the top was attached or something)... and dropped it. I almost cried, it was/is my favorite globe and so far has been one-of-a-kind - I've never seen another one like it! I now have a dark green one from my dad's estate waiting to go "into production" to join these others. By the way, Armored Guy actually replaces Connie the Conquistador - Connie was a plaster statue that I found dumped (along with that pedestal Mary's now using) in a Pizza Hut parking lot a few years ago. Conn did not make it through the flood, he completely fell apart. Here's his picture from an evening in 2004 - VERY 60's/70's, no? :)

Glad to know I'm not alone!! I have taken over all the yard work, he has plenty to do inside anyway seeing we are remodeling the bathroom and kitchen this year aye aye aye...but at least I can enjoy my beautiful plantings and such while doing my work..him on the other hand..lol...Babs I had posted a question in shrubs earlier that you may be able to give some insight on because I've read a few of your responses to others with similar questions..it is about possible screening ideas, and I posted pics..so if you have a second to take a look and possibly give some tips, or ideas I'd greatly appreciate it you always have great suggestions..and if any other posters here want to take a look feel free as well :)

yes not a tomato.....could be tomatillo or as Carolina Girl said, a sunflower. Sunflowers have slight fuzz on their leaves and no sheen (at least mine do). your plant looks a bit glossy.

As a youth I did something similar. I was always a reluctant helper -- who wants to pull a plow. However, one day I noticed a lot of little weeds between the raspberry rows. I thought I would surprise my dad and cultivate them without being asked. It was spinach he had broadcast between the rows. It never occurred to him I would garden without being asked or forced. He wasn't happy but my mother emphasized I was just helping. I don't think he ever came around to viewing it as a funny incident.

I about have a heart attack every time I see DH with the Costco sized, jug with sprayer, Round Up.

I know he sees my jaw drop - perhaps he giggles - and then I have to watch to see where he's going/what he's spraying.

Last spring, I WSed and planted what I'm guessing was a perennial and was awaiting the bloom this year. The plant got taller and taller - maybe 30". All of a sudden, he yanked it. I think he announced "This is a weed", instead of the normal question "Is this a weed?". Then I got the "but it has prickly leaves".

Funny thing, I have 2010 WS sprouts coming up now that look the same - prickly leaves!! This year, I can id the sprouts and explain exactly what the prickly leaves are about.

Gotta love 'em!!

This thread is too funny!

Last Saturday, I was battling the wild strawberries that creep into the back of my garden bed. I had a huge pile of weeds when out of the corner of my eye I see DH walk over to the bed and yank out an anemone and throw it on the pile. Then he just walked away.
