I need sympathy! :(

I went to my plot today and all my 4 o'clocks were gone. I thot somebody hat taken them until I realized that they had froze.

I went to the garden after the first dip which was around 39 degrees and some things had a touch of frost but no big deal. The next night was supposed to dip, but not be as cold, so I wasn't worried at all. Today I went expecting to see my wonderful 4 o'clocks. They were growing so quickly. I had about 20 planted. I have more seeds but honestly I am so bummed, I don't feel like planting.

Even worse, the two salvia - Yvonne's and cochinee, are gone! They were doing so well. The only thing that didn't get zapped were the CA poppies and the sweet pea. The cypress vine got zapped, but I had already planted more of that.

I'm so upset.

I've never lost anything to frost. Not fair!

even worse, I think someone stole a container of 4 o'clocks I was growing for my friend. There is a 1 in a 100 chance that she picked up the container but I don't think so. I'm waiting for her to call me back.

It wouldn't be the first time. I garden at a community garden. Last year I had a flower pot stolen with flowers in it! Can you imagine?

Do you think the seedling might still be alive? I watered them just in case. But I don't think so. I mean they are practically invisible.

It's just that I had finally got the seedlings to the point where I don't have to go there every day to water. Which since I don't garden at my home, is a bit of an issue. I was so glad that they had gotten to the point where I didn't have to go every day. And damn, those 4 o'clock were making me so proud.

ok, well I just had to vent. sorry for all the complaining, but I feel bad.

I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your wee ones. If you lived closer, I would give you some of mine. They are a mix of white and yellow.

i'm so sorry about your 4'oclocks!! that's so sad. :'(( i've been worried cuz our temps have gotten down pretty low lately. so far nothing has frozen. Thank GOD!!! and then last night we had a hail storm, again nothing lost that we have seen, and i homeschool my two kids and they have tons of plants outside for a project, (kinda forgot what it was LOL) but they weren't hurt either. i'm so happy about that also!! this is my first year ws'ing!! so i'm very very happy that everything has turned out so well!!

Pycnogenol is a powerful anti-oxidant (patented) made from the extract of pine trees that grow in the south of France. The manufacturer has sponsored studies on it and according to the studies it relieves many kinds of pain, including period cramps (which I suffer from badly) -- so I tried it and it really works for me. I was taking a lot of motrin for the pain during my periods and now I don't need to. So last night I thought, maybe it will help me for this bug I caught ... and maybe it did, who knows? I buy it from the health food store, I just get the cheapest kind I can find there. It's supposed to be similar to grape seed extract, which I haven't tried.

Your garden will show some effects.....even rinsing won't remove all of the herbicide and some succeptable plants will suffer. You will see twisted and odd shaped leaves and some plants may well die. BUT you may not see those effects....it depends on what herbicide you used....24D? 245T...trimec? But there is nothing to be done.....but I will bet you will never make that mistake again!!! OK...here comes the lecture! Quit using the chemical fertilizers on your garden and go with compost and composted manure, a bit of alfalfa pellets, some blood meal and that's pretty much all. I am not so organic minded that I don't use big guns when it comes to weeds and grass where it shouldn't be....but once I realized how much better my gardens were with just leaves, wood chips and composted manure....I have not touched that miracal grow sprayer.....and with only one sprayer, there's no chance of a similar error. Marcy, thank you for thinking of my poor plants. I'm almost to the point that herbicide is the only logical option, but I'm still having a problem with it. Would it not affect my cucumbers or squash at all or at a different rate? I haven't lost one of those so far (knock on wood really hard!). Dawn, thank you but this is only the second time I have had a garden. I just spend many hours reading up and researching. This and the other forums have helped me immensely. I have been going crazy all weekend. 11 plants gone and about 6 more wilted. I took a limb to work today and had some of the guys look at it. We dissected it and looked under a (weak) microscope. Everything in the vascular system looked good, except the pith was kind of hollow and white and webby looking. I will cut open a healthy one tomorrow to see how it looks and compare the two. Plus I plan on going to the extension office and possibly contacting a local master gardener that the other rangers have recommended. To answer your questions: No walnut trees anywhere near. I learned about this in my field botany class. I tried explaining this to my dad, but since he is older and wiser, and his garden is doing fine, he thought I was mistaken. :) The others are wilting. Very random pattern, but I assume some varieties are more succeptable to the problem than others. It had been doing well at avoiding my hybrids, but I have a wilted beefmaster and big beef now. No one would have used a weed-n-feed near the garden. I wonder though, since the lady that owned this house before me was apparently obsessed with flowers and weeds (I pull up plastic weed blocker all the time, all over the place) what she might have sprayed or put in the ground. But, I'm stills stumped, because why would it take two months to kill the plant? It seems like every avenue I go just has something that doesn't add up. I really hope to get some answers tomorrow. Bless you, Stephanie in Ga, for your concern for these recently-arrived neighbours in their sorrow and for how best to express your concern. How about just going over, ringing the doorbell, and when they answer, to express your concern and empathy for them in their sorrow? If you feel so drawn to, especially if it's the mother and she seems to be accepting your kindness in a certain way, maybe to open your arms to offer a hug. After the initial discussion, how about saying that you'd considered taking up a neighbourhood collection, or offering food on a rotating basis, assuring them that your desire was to offer whichever service would be most meaningful/helpful to them? Greetings Sue VA, I feel distressed that you were so troubled by the generous gift from your neighbours/friends on the death of your husband. Sometimes the huge pain of death of a loved one causes us to react to events in unusual ways, and I regret that you laid this extra suffering on yourself at that time: you had enough to contend with as it was. Almost certainly their gift indicated their desire to express their sincere concern at your time of sorrow and pain, not to judge that you were needy. Sometimes, it seems to me, we are more willing to offer a gift to others than to accept one graciously when it is sincerely offered to us. Is it a function of our desire to be independent, to pick up our own marbles, to not need to depend on others for anything, I wonder? You spoke of the difficulty of forgiving them ... and I am wondering ... what was there to forgive? They had expressed their concern, in what they felt to be an appropriate way, a tangible one, in a good, generous spirit. Whatever the reason ... I am sorry that it has caused so much hurt and trouble for you ... and for so long! Is it still troubling your heart? Have you talked it over/out with a counsellor? I am so sorry to hear that you lost your plants, by frost and theft..

I think you should go back and plant some more seeds..dont let the frost or theif win !! There is still time to start over...I know it is the principle of it BUT go plant those seeds !!!!

I'm sorry about your lost seedlings, Ellen. I lost some seedlings earlier this week --still covered--with temps around 36-38 overnight. I felt the same way about planting more.

Yesterday, though, I picked up some milk jugs at joe-to-go and Starbucks, watered the Pro-mix, and got to work. At first I felt like it was "work," but by the third container I was happy to be reseeding and replacing the lost babies. I agree with others -- plant some more and you will feel better. :)

I'm so sorry about your frosty babies! I don't know if they'll come back from the root, maybe depends on how much root development there was?? I lost most of my morning glories a couple of days ago-but still have my nasties, they went into the garage-mg's were already planted.

Keep going, Ellen.
When you get more seeds started, you won't feel so bad. You know you CAN plant year round if you put your mind to it.
I had all my beautiful French marigold seedlings mowed down by some chewing bug within a day of planting them in a pretty row!
But, I believe I will still try to grow some this year anyway! Okay so they will be a little bit behind the ones that are already coming here from Mexico.
But mine will cost a bit less and with the money I save, I will buy MORE SEEDS!

Wow!!! That's a bummer!!!

I guess I am lucky, then. We had frost 2 nights in a row this past week. I left all my containers outside, fully open...except for 4 containers, 1 with cucumbers growing, 2 with amaranth and 1 with another tender plant, which I put in my unheated garage. As far as I can tell I didn't lose anything...we had frost on the cars and temps around 28 degrees.

My game plan next year is to segregate the hardy plants from the tenders, and, when I do several varieties in one container, make sure they are all tender or all hardy. This way I'll know which containers to bring into the garage once sprouts appear. This year I planted nearly all frost hardy plants and that worked well as all I had to do is open containers up some on hot days and make sure the containers stayed nicely watered.

Now that nearly all my containers are open allt he way though, I have to water much more as they dry out faster.

I need sympathy! :(
