Sap in the roots?

I cut some for firewood each winter. In the past, only had a small wood stove, now have a bigger wood burning furnace.

I have at least 4 pin cherry (aka fire cherry) trees, up to 15 inches in diameter. In my area, these do poorly. Most don't survive 30 years.

These pin cherries are already completely without leaves, probably a symptom of their poor health. Some are half dead on top. They need to be taken down.

Are they at maximum "on-the-stump" dryness already (being without leaves), or do I need to wait for colder weather to arrive?

I'd rather start now.

Thanks!!
