Rose Rosette Disease

I live in Southwest Missouri and have lost dozens of roses the last two years to RRD. I had a lovely formal rose garden and my husband really wants me to replant. Has anyone had experience replanting in the same ground where RRD has been?

I had about 200 roses and between RRD and a week of 18-20 degree weather the last of April I have only about 50 roses left.

I usually replant roses right away to substitute RRD victims. I do it for 5+ years and never had a case of RRD with these new bushes. However, I never had a really advanced case of RRD because my garden is small and I watch my roses carefully. So I usually notice RRD at early stage. I never tried to save a rose by cutting sick canes to the ground. I always dig it out right away. So virus can be not in the roots yet. It could be completely different story, I think, if you plan to replant in the position were rose was sick for long time. The RRD infected pieces of roots can produce some growth that will be also diseased. So in this case I would wait before replanting in the same place.

I lived in Northeast Arkansas until 4 years ago. Now I am in Florida. While in Arkansas I lost a third of my garden to RRD. When I replaced the roses I did not have repeat RRD.

Sorry for the delayed response. It has been a very hectic past few days! Dumb question. Is RRD contagious? Meaning if I try the wait and see approach (by removing only the impacted canes instead of digging up the whole plant) with the roses who don't seem to have it as bad yet.....will I take a risk that somehow the RRD could get transmitted to the roses who don't have it? I would hate to lose any of the seemingly healthy roses by doing this. Moving forward, is there anything I can do to lessen the chances of the roses getting RRD? This summer Japanese beetles have been widespread in this area. Honestly, I can't ever remember them being this bad before now...or ever even seeing them really. I know of several other people who have knockout roses here and everyone is having the same problem with the Japanese beetles feasting on them. So as bad as it may sound, I can take some solace in knowing it is not just my roses that are getting hit. Is there anything I can spray on the roses to prevent Japanese beetles from attacking them?
