I have a pot ghetto!!!!
Comments (11)WOW! 500 plus - I can't imagine planting all that out. I'd love to see pics of your whole gardens. The individual plants are fun to see. Please, take us on a tour of the garden... (if you have the time and pics of course) This is my first year and so far, I have over 130 containers of perennials. I can't wait to start sowing the annuals. I'm getting more and more excited about those as they will bloom so quickly. Keep pics of those pot ghettos coming! Nikki...See MoreFeeding your pot ghetto?
Comments (16)When you want them to grow, a high nitrogen fertilizer works, then switch to one high in phosphate and potassium to induce blooms. Ive used a professional time release lawn fertilizer on some of my potted plants in the spring and been pleasantly surprised on how well it worked! I recently bought cotton seed meal-has anyone tried that or blood meal on their roses? I do know my roses respond well to water soluble nitrogen when I see they they have ceased growing. I was also told that rust and Epsom salts help roses! I dont know if Epsom salts would help me since I have naturally high calcium and magnesium here-probably too much calcium for the roses to be really happy and Im assuming enough magnesium TO make them happy. Im going to add some sulfur soon to bring down the PH in the beds. The pots do much better than the beds with a mix of peat moss and soil/compost. Im assuming the peat is acidifying the soil enough to bring down the PH to the near neutral PH they like....See MorePot ghetto in a hurricane?
Comments (27)I don't have a garage either, and I'll be moving the car this afternoon to get it farther away from the old birch tree that's not aging well. Many years ago the previous birch tree in that location fell in a storm and just missed my car. I'm mostly finished with the evacuation; just the deck houseplants and the birdfeeders. Correction, bird and bee feeders. This is the jam feeder I keep for the orioles and catbirds, but the bees must have heard about Hurricane Irene and they're busy stocking up on Jam. The orioles usually chase the bees away but I've never seen these numbers before. They ignored me completely when I photographed them, although I wouldn't try to stand between them and the jam. I think I'll leave that feeder up for a while. Claire...See MoreSo: What Happened To Dee's Pot Ghetto?
Comments (17)Just checking in to see how things are going a month following Irene... We were without power for 6 days. Dee, I heard and understood your frustration. After a while, cooking on the gas grille (we were lucky to have it) gets old, just as I dared to think that, we ran out of gas and there was NO grille! The no flushing/no shower was the worst! All candles were gone by the end of 6 days, not to mention any food that had been in the freezer. Lost the top half of several 60' trees, but no damage to our property. Neighbors just down the road had a three trunk tree go through their house, taking out their bathroom. I initially posted to say that I have never had such profuse blooms of morning glories or perennial (branching) Maximillian Sunflowers as we had this year about 7-10 days after Irene came through. Also, I usually see some color on our trees by October 1st... a few isolated leaves is all as of today. Dee and Carl, I wish you good things after all you went through. Susan...See Morealicia7b
