Suggestions for the best roses to pot

I got my hands on two lovely faux terra cotta pots...the kind that looks like they weigh a ton and they don't. They look very old worldly and aged. I am looking to place them near my pond in two pretty bare areas. I need roses that will really brighten up those two spots and make a statement....preferably something that will have larger petals and grows prolifically.

No preference for color, but would like something that coordinates with the terra cotta pots which are huge....probably 25-30 gallons each. I've read previous posts and I understand that they should be own root, watered and fertilized well and have good drainage. Any suggestions on the varieties I should seek out and where to buy them?

The prettiest potted rose I ever grew was Gruss An Aachen. The Antique Rose Emporium has them. Loads of flowers all season long. The creamy to white color will be lovely and elegant with the terracotta color. The bush is nicely shaped and leafy. Rebloom is quick after you cut off the faded flowers. A superior plant in sun or part sun.

Ooh, BIG pots! Red: Lavaglut, Red Cascade or Old Gay Hill China. Pink: Marie Daly or Nachitoches Noisette or Climbing Pinkie-- but it would need support. Deep Pink: Country Dancer (a bloomin' fool) The mini Sweet Chariot would cascade down the sides, and will get 30" wide-- and to vamp you with perfume and delicate pale apricot blooms the wonderful Perle D'Or. Hey, you oughta get MORE pots!

I use a mix of amend, compost, and either Mastery Nursery Gardeners choice or the Dr Earth one as it states it can be used for large outdoor containers. It also depends how much rain you get in winter and if you plan to keep them in pots permanently. Mine are permanent in pots. Miracle grow I have found can get quite compacted over time in my rainy zone so I have switched to the other two and every year I take out a third of the soil and add Vermonts Compost plus but you can use any compost. Here is a couple pics of my potted roses.Those are two Joseph's coat climbing roses and are only two years old in my garden. These are new this year and haven't bloomed yet as I cut both blue Girls buds off and potted them up to promote a bushier plant. Although Blue Girl doesn't have too many leaves naturally anyway. Closest to farthest is Blue for You, Blue Girl, Earth Angel, Blue Girl, and last is Heirloom. These are new eden climbing roses and I have one on either side of my archway but are training along the fence as my archway is covered with grapes and clematis. This is Earth Angel, also new and only came with three thin canes but all that shorter growth is new canes coming out from the roots. This photo is a little old as it's gotten bigger since this photo. I have many more but I don't want to bombard you with too many photos. Bonus: Sharifa Asma just opening. Not potted but still pretty.

Out of the 14 different classes of rose that I've grown in pots, one class bloomed better than the others: Polyantha Mlle. Cecille Brunner Perle d'Or' Marie Pavie' Be sure you get the real one, there is a ho-hum imposter that is a boring Florabunda sold under the same name. I've grown them both, the real Marie Pavie is quite fragrant and has smaller flowers and reddish pedicles. 'Little White Pet' 'The Fairy' in a pot, the canes arch beautifully. Good luck with your pot garden. My neighbor grew a dozen or so miniature roses in pots successfully. I didn't care for the brush like growth habit, of most of them. But what ever you like is best. What garden zone do you live in? Are you west or east of the mountains. How cold your winters get my influence what varieties do best in your area. Your most relavent advice will come from rose growers in your region, especially in the relatively exposed environment of a pot. You don't want the roots freezing hard. I would say that with a pot the size you say, I would stick with a small variety, perhaps a mini or miniflora. Something that doesn't grow much more than 3 feet call. We get a lot of blackspot in this area. I think Sweet Arlene Has been disease free for me. And that is in not ideal sun conditions and with inconsistent spraying.

This American planting mix most likely can't be found in Greece. Roses like clay soil but in pots you also need something to lighten up the clay. I should have thought perlite would work well. Greek friends grow wonderful roses in pots on their roof in Maroussi, even tall climbers. They use a bagged soil so I suggest you ask at a local nursery about the best mix for roses.

In that large a pot you might be able to get away with a standard (tree rose) surrounded at the bottom by a miniture. J&P usually has pictures of such things in it's catalog. In a small pot (such as they show) the combination of the two plants would quickly outgrow it but in yours it just might work. Of course there would be practical considerations such as protecting the Standard (tree rose) over the winter, but in your zone it is certainly possible that it could be accomplished. Anyway it's just a thought that you might want to check out.

They don't HAVE to be own-root to live in a pot. Most of my large potted roses are grafted, many on R. multiflora rootstock. I grow HTs, shrubs, floribundas and minis in pots. YOur choice.

There are many many choices for pots. Mostly I think about roses that bloom constantly as good specimen choices for a pot. Aside from old garden roses and floribundas mentioned above, the new class of mini-floras would do great, or even some of the minis, which can have fairly sizeable bush size if given enought root space. One of my favorite minis of the moment is Caliente, a vibrant red mini that has been blooming a lot and non-stop by my front door for the past several months. I only got it that past spring, and it already looks almost mature. (maybe that could go at the base of a standard rose, as suggested above.)
Some big mini-floras (3 to 4 feet tall, and bushy) that have exceptional flower form and are supposed to really perform are Leading Lady and Whirlaway, a blushing white and pure white respectively. I only just got both of these, so I can't honestly give a performance report, but I haven't heard anyone yet who didn't really like them.

Souvernir de la Malmaison is a great rose for a pot. It stays low and rounded. Makes lots of fragrant blooms too.

Mary....Tree rose, huh? Definitely something to consider!

More pots is a great idea, Barbara! I love the idea of the roses cascading too.

I have been reading this week about the David Austin rose 'Sharifa Asma' and how it is said to do well in a pot. And such beauty! That might be fun to try.

I guess I am suggesting pinks as the other I had in mind was 'The Faun'. Including a link to Shelley's post of earlier this year. These pictures made me run right out and order one for next year from Roses Unlimited.
