Newbies... Just in case you didn't know...

If you saw some of my recent photos - there were a lot of blooming plants but... most of them were reseeds - Ex. Bachelor buttons - larkspurs - nigellas

My wintersown bbuttons are just now opening up; larkspurs and nigellas still green. Also, all of my zinnias are green and big, but of course no blooms until it is really hot - and that may not be until June/July...

The coreopsis you see blooming is also from wintersowing three years ago.. didn't do any this year, but it probably would have bloomed by now since they are early bloomers.

Also, cosmos just bloomed last week. But cleomes, Salvia Corals, Sanvitalia, vincas - all have not bloomed yet.

The rose campions were mounds last year and they bloomed early May this year - taking two years to bloom, as most perennials/bienniels do (except for coreopsis and prob some others - not sure which right off hand). Blue Salvias come back every year - they bloomed, the wintersown Salvia Blues this year - still small...

So, don't be deceived by my photos...reseeds bloom earlier than planted out seedlings - same with my poppies - they were reseeds, green all winter - bloomed early March (and now pulled)...

Another tip, many perennials that don't need cold to germinate can be sown in the fall, overwintered in the garden, and will bloom the following summer. So collect seeds from coneflowers, rudbeckia, and shastas this year, or trade/buy seeds, and sow them in the fall just as the leaves begin to turn. Plant them out and wish them the best.

This is of course, a zone 7 guide. Not sure about the lower zones.

Hi Carrie,

Thanks for the info. I was thinking that perhaps you had so many blooms because you are in a warmer zone than me. This is my 2nd year WS, I decided to try more annuals. So far everything is still on the small side. Trying to be patient, tempted to buy a few annuals from the garden center just so I can have some color before July. Though all in all I really do enjoy growing my own from seed.

All of those plants, except the camellia, are supposed to drop their leaves in winter. Passion vines normally die to the ground in our winters. With the camellia, the drooping does not sound good, but you won't know for sure until it warms up in spring. The fingernail test looking for green inner bark is not 100% reliable. A woody plant can look fine above ground and yet still be dead, if the circulation system between roots and stems has been damaged; the stems can keep going in cool weather until they need more water than the damaged circulation system can supply. But, your camellia may be just fine, and just drop damaged leaves and resprout a whole new set in spring. So you won't really know what's dead until April or May or even June, depending on how long it takes to warm up.

Aimless, I encountered a similar problem with the upper cabinets when I renovated my current kitchen. The old ones were built in place, and were a full 12" on the INSIDE. New standard factory built cabinets are 12" on the OUTSIDE. I have hand made plates that needed to be put above the fridge because they no longer fit in the plate cupboard. Out of sight, out of mind. So we never use them anymore. :( For weeks afterwards, I was measuring cabinets everywhere to see if my cabinet company had cheaped out on me. But no, I've never seen a proper sized cabinet anywhere. Stupid, stupid things that they seem to rely on the consumer not to know about. And I'm guessing you're on slab, and that's why you needed to know about your floor outlets early?

Token, I might just try some fall planting.

I get tons of seeds from my coneflowers so I can handle that :)

If it works that is good if not at least I tried :)

Karen, if you didn't have mulch, you'd probably have some reseeders. I did. They sprouted this winter and are putting out buds now.
