How do you know what DIDN'T make it?

Some of my shrubs that had leaves before the snow storm, now they've all dropped. Does this mean the end of quite a few of my plants?

I have a Duetzia and Weigela that don't look too good, but they might just need to resprout? My passion vine lost all it's leaves and I have a donated Hydrangea tree that did as well- not sure about seeing any resprout. I have a Camellia that has leaves/buds, but the leaves are drooping-but the plant is not.

Unfortunately I did a lot of buying in the Spring and now I think these plants did not have enough time to be strong enough?

Only the shedding by the camellia is cause for alarm. The other shrubs are deciduous, dropping all their leaves every year. The passion vine would be expected to send out new stems in spring, if a locally hardy type like bluecrown passionflower growing in the ground or otherwise situated so the roots did not freeze and die.

Try the fingernail test. Often, if you scratch the stem of a plant with your fingernail and it is green, then it's still alive. Spring is just around the corner and our grey gardens will soon look a whole lot better!

Your plant looks great and healthy, I would say the cooler temps are the reason for the pods being small. If you can stand the stuff (the smell) Alaska fish fertilizer is a great one to use for an in ground plant. Though sometimes I use what I have on hand like MG tomato plant food 18-18-21 with some micro nutes. But I container garden more than in ground. @nucleartumbleweed... Congrats on the new Electrolux's (I have the older 70 WaveTouch series) you should enjoy your machines very much. What I do when I'm done using mine is wipe down the door glass, boot (the rubber seal between the door and the drum), take out the detergent drawer and shake it dry. Leave the door open and the detergent drawer open or leave it out (on top of the machine) to dry out until next use or for 24/48 hours. Use hot for your whites and you can do a Sanitize wash every once in a while to help kill bacteria not only in your clothes but in the machine also (use Sanitary for whites). Warm is now the new Cold. Temps in today efficient machines have been turned (dumbed) down. Warm is now in the 70-80 degree range (not in the 90/100's like they used to be). Use cold infrequently for dark specialty items that are super delicate...but most of today's colorfast times can withstand warm. Do the Clean Cycle when the machine promps you (Electrolux is every 50 washes), with a cup of bleach. Remember scented bleach or splashless bleach is not a disinfectant. Only traditional good old bleach is labeled to kill 99.9% of household germs. You can use "pods" but DO NOT put them in the detergent drawer. They go directly into the drum with the clothes. The same with scent beads, pods or scent crystals. Most of us separate our whites from our colors. If you want dazzling whites, wash them together with no color items. You don't need all the stuff we post here in pictures or talk about. We just get carried away here and simply must have our stash of new and improved or just discussed items. Ask if have more questions, there are a bunch of great people here that would be happy to assist you.

Your advice is very interesting and valued, thanks! I'm sorry I neglected to clarify an important error in the rendering (yes, done by cabinet mass manufacturers, as Patricia CC nailed). They drew in the 72" wall in the wrong place; it is 34" back. There is 137" between the 72" wall and the fridge/stove wall. Sorry I overlooked that. (it was created largely so I could show my husband how great it would be to remove the chimney and move the fridge to the opposite wall, not for accuracy) I need to figure out a comfortable (not minimum) space between fridge and cabs/counter. We previously had an island against the chimney wall that came out into the room 42" with open shelves for pots, pans, bowls, that we loved functionally. The fridge was next to, not across, though. (Currently fridge is working but when we replace it we will likely do side by side or of similar small size- no behemoth fridges here). We'd appreciate a cave corner cabinet for a few items, like steam juicer, that we only use for a few weeks of the year but don't want in the basement. We also have a large freestanding hutch nearby. We don't need much more space than we have, just to use it well. Here's what got us excited about the peninsula: -laundry chute may be positioned on the dining side of the 72" cabinet run, other specialty storage can be too- utilizing corner space from the back easily -landing pad for loading groceries into fridge (feels more natural than counter btwn stove and fridge) -various stages of baking projects- rolling, cooling -no counter crevices to clean -serving food to dining area -belly up to the bar feel for guests or family- it would get used a lot -divide kitchen and dining areas somewhat Does this change your opinion?

Sarah I was going to say sponge painting too lol! Not necessarily a bad look, but the aforementioned bedrooms in my first home were done poorly in ugly colors by the teens of the previous owner. One room was smurf blue, so it looked like a smurf blew up in there. With red shag carpet no less! The other room we called the "mudroom" because of the wall color . . . None of that was "trendy" but to the taste of the teens, and I already mentioned the horror of my teen bedroom. My dear mother tried to keep it under control, but I had bright pink zinnia wallpaper and purple shag carpet. And bright white painted furniture with psychedelic trim elements in orange, pink, lime green, bright blue and purple . . . It was the bomb! Sock it to ya! But, as a cautionary tale, I would say try and keep teen room design elements to those easily replaced. It took two coats of paint before my splatter painted walls looked flat with color. I would not be able to function in my former bedroom, but I kind of wax nostalgic for my little brother's wallpaper with the small print of astronauts and rocket ships against a white background. That was less of a moment for regret, although not necessarily something an adult would like, unless they were terribly sentimental. He acquiesced to just one accent wall . . . I think after my room, my wallpapering parents were burned out!!

You wait. It's not warm enough yet for many plants to grow back. You might not see the passion vine again until May or June. Deutzia and Weigela can tolerate very cold temperatures; I'm sure they will be fine.

Eucs, poor eucs, grey, straw colored, shedding once-beautiful leaves, no idea if they'll come back, from trunk or ground. Oh they were so beautiful.

Patience is necessary, I hate looking at "dead" sticks too but it is too soon to prune or know for many.

The "dead" growth can protect if we have more weather. Pruning it down too soon can kill.

All of those plants, except the camellia, are supposed to drop their leaves in winter. Passion vines normally die to the ground in our winters.

With the camellia, the drooping does not sound good, but you won't know for sure until it warms up in spring. The fingernail test looking for green inner bark is not 100% reliable. A woody plant can look fine above ground and yet still be dead, if the circulation system between roots and stems has been damaged; the stems can keep going in cool weather until they need more water than the damaged circulation system can supply. But, your camellia may be just fine, and just drop damaged leaves and resprout a whole new set in spring.

So you won't really know what's dead until April or May or even June, depending on how long it takes to warm up.

Sometimes after being frozen those look OK clear until spring flowering and then everything falls off.

How do you know what DIDN'T make it?
