A small correction, I don't think any of these are HT's. Could be one or two but most I think are shrubs or floribundas. I know it's a tiny quibble but people responding might over look your post as they don't have any comments about K HT's.

Although I grow a lot of Kordes very few are hybrid teas. Mostly because of climate but also because I prefer other classes of roses.

Finally I'm not up to speed with the newer K's offered by Palatine. I hear they supply very good roses. And as they seem to be somewhat new in the business they also seem to feature the new K's.

Made me double check as they are all listed as HT's by Palatine, HMF also lists all of them as HT's, many are florist HT's which gives them a longer vase life which is one of the things that I like.

The only one I have is Caramel Antique and it was new to me this year. That baby is GORGEOUS!! It last forever in a vase if you happen to make arrangements. Mine didn't bloom alot this year but I hope it takes off and blooms much better in years to come. You will LOVE it. Mine came from Palatine too, who by the way sends some great size bareroots. MASQUERADE is an odd one. It might like your cooler climate better than my hot one. I've had mine for 3yrs, and it finally has been putting out some good blooms. It tends to get thrips. But in the fall, it popped out some real beauties that didn't get ruined by them cuz it was so cold! My plant reached over 5ft, actually close to 6. The blooms are pretty, but they're very flat. Not high-centered, but I like them. The color is a weird dusty mauvey-pink with a lighter, almost white reverse. Don't know about scent. Decent repeat.

MONDIALE is another tall grower. Close to 6ft also. It's a very pretty warm medium pink with a hint of yellow at the base. It reminds me a lot of another rose that I got from Regans several yrs ago called LOIS WILSON. That rose has no history or info about hybridizer, lineage, etc. I would almost bet it could be one and the same. They both look alike and have the same growth habit.... monster! LW is in the ground and grows over 8ft if let go. MONDIALE has been in a big pot for a couple yrs and it's big for a potted one. Blooms last a long time. No scent.

MAGMA is another tall grower. Mine averages about 5ft+. Blooms are nice, but again flat-ish. Very long-lasting. Good repeat. Don't know about scent on that one.

QUEEN OF HEARTS is one I got this past season. So far I like it, but it seems to take forever for the blooms to open up. They tend to ball in the colder temps. It peaked out about 3½ft (in a big pot) and had fair repeat.

OSIRIA is one I got from Vintage as a tiny own root several yrs ago. It still hasn't done much of anything. The soil is crap tho in that bed.

CARAMEL ANTIKE I also just got this past season. It's in a 5gal pot for now. The blooms it did give me were pretty. Seems to grow lanky like a shrub. I'm going to put it in one of my DA beds.

I have several other Kordes roses coming from Palatine in a couple months. Ordered LAGUNA, BONANZA, THANKSGIVING ROSE, CHARMANT, BEVERLY and HOLSTEINPERLE. Can't wait to see those. Too bad they sold out of SAFARI. If you like HTs, that's a really nice one. Got it this season, and it was kinda slow, but the end of the season, it had some real beauties!

The only one I have is Osiria. This year was its second year. Last year it was a real blackspot magnet. This year it did better. It wasn't any worse than any of the others. It bloomed intermittently throughout the growing season. It has a nice color, but form is not consistent. Perhaps next year it will improve some.

Assumptions will get you every time!

You are right all except one is a HT.

I really thought tha Kordes seeking disease resistance in their new lines would have shunned HT's as they not the best on that score and usually are selected for their fragrance, size and look. Plus they are typically not as hardy as F's and shrubs. And... Palatine coming from Canada you would think would avoid HT's for that reason.

Oh well jumping to c's can get you in trouble. Sorry.

Eliza is another new K ht; from Palatine spring 08; also not vigorous and has typical ht plant habit; not very productive so far; BUT, it has lived up to its Kordes 4* disease resistance rating, being completely healthy here.

Anyone have experience with Grande Amore?

I do happen to have Grande Amore. It is healthy with regular spraying. It blooms regularly, but not in large numbers of flowers at any given time. Mine is a second year plant. The flower color is a clear, bright scarlet. There isn't much of any fragrance to my nose. Its growth habit is straight up. It got somewhere between 8 and 10 ft tall, by my estimate, as tall as my Lavender Lassie, but nowhere did it get as wide. Like I said, it grew straight up with respectably large canes. The only down side to this one, if there is one, is that the flower size is not all that large. I think it would top out around 4 inches across for maximum flower size here. It might make a nice arranger's rose or for bouquets for the house, but I think it is a little small for showing. However, size is only 10 points out of the hundred when judges look at it. Overall, it is a keeper for me. Below is the best picture of it that I have at the moment. Behind it is the white gallica L' Ingenue which flopped all over and is trying to come up all over its area. Actually, color-wise, maybe this picture is a bit Christmas-like.

Osiria, a beautiful deep red w/ white reverse. Three yrs. old in zone 5. I get about 10 blossoms a season

I've got Queen of Hearts. It was two years old this year and had a ton of blooms. The blooms don't have exhibition form, but they're very pretty with orange edges and a white center. It's been very productive and healthy and gets to about 3' by 3'. It dies to the ground but comes back quickly in the spring. I'm ordering a bunch of Kordes for myself this spring and I've been very happy with everything that I've gotten from Palatine.

If you get the Masquerade and Magma Freelander roses from Palatine be sure to get the special instructions to grow them from Rahel.
I bought both of them and shovel pruned them after three very disappointing seasons.
The Masquerade had the ugliest blooms I had ever seen, but the plant was a monster grower but produced very few lateral canes from the mains and that is where most of the blooming takes place, on the laterals.
Magma never grew well and the blooms were small and ugly as well.
After I SP'd them I discovered that there were special growing instructions to make the Freelander roses grow and bloom correctly. I wish Palatine had told me that when I bought mine, but they didn't.
Otherwise you may end up wasting your money on them as I did.

what were the special growing instructions?

The special instructions were fairly complicated and I can't remember exactly how they go. But, they basically dealt with pruning and deadheading and other growing items to get the roses off to the right start and maximize growth and flower production. Otherwise, the roses won't do as well as they can.
Just be sure to contact Rahel at Palatine and ask her about the growing instructions for the Freelander roses.

There are special, 'FAIRLY COMPLICATED' instructions for growing Freelanders!?!? To perform as well as other modern roses, Freelanders require a special cultural regimen? Given the fact that I've ordered a boatload of them for early delivery, this is not good news . . . Why is it that Palatine and other suppliers don't reveal that fact up-front? John -- how did you learn that Rahel is the keeper of this special info?

Jaxondel I saw a posting about it and I think it was on the RC website, but I honestly am not sure of that. I just know it caught me by surprise and I was very disappointed that I didn't know it up front when I placed my order with Palatine. I saw the posting after I had already shovel pruned Masquerade and Magma both so I really wasted my money on those two.
The posting said you could get the instructions from Rahel about the Freelanders. Maybe they are afraid of scaring off potential buyers so they don't make it very widely known. That sounds kind of bad though and I would hate to think that Palatine would do it intentionally. I love dealing with Rahel and don't think she would ever be intentionally evasive.
Palatine Roses has sent me the best bareroot roses I have ever seen and they're customer service is second to none. I have even had Rahel's father e-mail me several times with answers to questions about their roses.
Magma didn't grow or bloom much at all. And the blooms I did get were small, waxy, and just unhealthy looking. The bush was healthy, but non-vigorous growing and small. Thus, no blooming to speak of.
Masquerade grew like a monster straight up with no laterals so I got very few blooms at all and they were very small and UGLY--probably the ugliest blooms I have ever seen on a rose. Pasty waxlike color and texture to the blooms and very washed out looking.
One very good thing is that both of these roses were completely disease free for me. I do spray about every 3 weeks but I still have a few roses that will get a touch of BS or PM even with spraying. But, not Masquerade or Magma.
According to the posting, these instructions will allow the rose to grow more vigorously and have more laterals to bloom on. My Freelander roses had almost no laterals and that is where the blooms grow the most on many HT's.

I've got a couple of Freelanders (Countess Sonja, Queen of Hearts, Ice Girl) and I've never had any trouble getting them to bloom and I certainly don't do anything special to them. In fact, Countess Sonja almost always has blooms on it at least partly because they last so long.

Now I know why my Countess Sonja and Ice Girl have given me almost no blooms .....I am treating them all wrong! I need to get those special instructions Pronto. Thanks for the heads up. Lesley

I would be interested in knowing whether these roses are pretty well disease resistant. I am not a sprayer, nor will I become one, so I am particularly interested in this. Although I love hybrid teas, I have been scared off of them because they require so much apraying, so have been concentrating more or less on the shrubs, although I have even had trouble with them. This area is blackspot heaven because we are between two rivers, I believe.Barb
