Queen of Hearts Kordes Rose
Comments (42)Wow thanks Kelly! It might just be worth it to try. Sorry for kinda hi-jacking your thread! How did you find that website anyway? Never heard of it before. They have some interesting stuff on there. It kinda reminds me of the old mail order company I used to order from back in the 80's and 90's (before the internet) called Colonial Garden Kitchens. They had some unusual roses for sale along with kitchen and household items. Waaay back then I ordered what roses they had, most of which were never really heard of anywhere else, and very well could actually be known by some other names. Altho Vintage Gardens got ahold of one of them that I ordered to replace the original back before they closed up. And that one was GREEN DYNASTY. CGK also had a striped one that I can't remember the name of.... something like CANDY CANE or something like that. Ended up being a climber, which I had no place for at the time, so I planted it at my mom's, but my dad wouldn't let her water anything, so it died. The only rose I still have from them is a lavender called BLUE WEDGEWOOD, which is very lovely. I have no idea if it is actually something else tho. They also had offered WORLD PEACE before it was more widely offered elsewhere. I often wondered what happened to them. I got a lot of neat kitchen gadgets and stuff. They were located somewhere back east and the roses came from some nursery in Pennsylvania. I think the name was Lakeland Nursery maybe. Something like that anyway. Well, I think it would be worth trying. They're cheap enough! I have a feeling it'll be like Michigan Bulb or Gurney's and the roses will probably be all dried out. But if they are at least close to being alive, I could soak 'em for a week or so. Be worth it. Thanks for the heads up!! I'll let you know what the result is.... Oh... I got ROSE OF HOPE last fall from Chamblee's. Hasn't bloomed yet, but I'll be anxious to see it when it does bloom!!...See MoreWhat Are Your Best Performing Kordes Roses??
Comments (42)This will be my second season with Bliss Parfuma and I also love it! Extremely healthy with gorgeous blooms that last forever and a lovely bushy, well foliated shrub shape. I have found fragrance to be moderately strong in heat and very strong in cooler temperatures, which might explain how it won the Glasgow Tollcross Fragrance Award. It has a very pleasant and unusual fragrance like a jasmine-based perfume with hints of sweet fruit and…maybe shea butter? I have never grown any other modern Kordes aside from Beverly, which really does have the most amazing peach/plum/citrus fragrance. It has a very attractive growth habit for a hybrid tea and has a low thorn count. I no longer grow it because it frequently developed powdery mildew in my conditions, a weakness it must have inherited from its parent The McCartney Rose. Amongst older Kordes roses, none can be more fragrant, beautiful, charming, romantic or floriferous than Crimson Glory or Barcelona!...See MoreFunny business at Home Depot: "Kordes" roses
Comments (18)In SE VIrginia, Home Depot contracts with a local nursery to produce most 0f the plant material, arrange the displays and provide all the care. Plants that are not up to par are pulled by nursery employees and put back on the truck. The nursery employees are fairly knowledgeable but when they're not there, good luck getting answers to plant questions. Since the nursery eats the losses they are motivated to take good care of the plants and locally, they do a very good job keeping up with the watering. Lowe's, on the other hand, has a plant specialist in the department assisted by others who have some on-line training. The Plant Specialist does the ordering and makes markdown decisions. Our Lowe's has several employees who are knowledgeable and their training is geared towards assisting customers. During peak season they are assisted by vendors who unload and arrange the plants. In our local store, the nursery has a subsidiary who provides these merchandisers, called Plant Partners. Lowe's expects the merchandisers to focus on tasking and let Lowe's employees handle the customers. The weak point in this arrangement was that the watering was supposed to be handled by part-time, untrained employees. (One told me she refused to water the Kordes roses because they were so thorny and she wasn't provided any gloves!) I've worked at both stores....See MoreWeak Mr. Lincoln Rose
Comments (13)"Weak Mr. Lincoln" should be part of the name of this rose, since it's not a robust grower even in warmer more rose-friendly zones like yours. This rose has the reputation for being a "one-cane wonder" all over the place, and yours looks to be showing those tendencies as well. Mounding up soil around the base of the rose through the graft, getting plenty of water/sun, and adding alfalfa hay or pellets to the soil around the rose can help, but it just might not be a robust grower in any situation. You're in a zone where you don't have to bury the graft like we do in cold zones, but I've been told that mounding up soil around the base can help encourage the rose to send up more basal shoots (additional branches from the graft). Bottom line is you're not necessarily doing anything wrong, though there might be some tweaks to help a little. It's just not a very bushy or robust rose in general. Cynthia...See Morebarbarag_happy
