Where to buy those 9/11 'Always Remember' series of roses?

Read about it from a recent issue of Rose Magazine but the website is Edmunds Roses and apparently they are out of business. I liked "Firefighter" and 2 other roses they offered. How can I buy one now that the grower itself is out of business?

S & W Greenhouses carries Firefighter. If you look up the rose name in the HelpMeFind database, and click on the "buy from" tab, it will give you a list of vendors.

Firefighter is now being distributed by Weeks Roses, and should be available with this year's bareroots at most of your local nurseries. It is already available here in California as a bareroot now, as some of our nurseries have already gotten their deliveries for this season.

I think Michelle (deviant-deziner) has explained the approach to memorials quite well. Minimalism and simplicity, when well executed - isn't restrictive - it's evocative. For a controversy over a monument, all you have to look to is Maya Lin's Vietnam Veteran's Memorial. There was huge opposition to the design's supposedly irreverent simplicity. And now, it is almost like the grandfather (grandmother?) to a whole era of minimalistic monuments. Another example to look to, in comparing the Ground Zero memorial, is the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin, designed by Peter Eisenman. What he said about his design could also be applied to this discussion: "It stands there, silent. The one who has to talk is you." I will be visiting a friend in NYC soon - I'll try to visit the Ground Zero memorial, take pics and come back with my personal on-the-ground experience of it. - Audric

We had just helped my mom move to her retirement place, driving her car and a moving van down and flying back.... on September 10. It was my brother, my nephew, my son and myself, and believe me it went through my mind as they prepared the cabin for takeoff that it was probably not a good idea to have four family members on a plane together. September 11 was my first day back to work. The drive is about 30 minutes and I remember the morning so vividly. Fifteen minutes into the commute, at the exact moment the first plane was hitting the tower, I was overcome by a thought. "This is the most beautiful, perfect day. I can never remember such a clear, blue sky." I arrived at work and shortly after reporters started running downstairs to say, "A plane has hit the World Trade Center." And we all thought, oh, a small private plane. Our neighbors were in Bali that morning, on a business related trip. Their experience on that day was filled with danger. Americans were ordered out of their hotels. "Where are we suppposed to go?" We don't care was the answer. Somehow their group found someone that would take them to the airport where they waited. Think "A Year of Living Dangerougly." Their small children were back home in the U.S. with the grandparents and it was a tense time until they could return. Beanmomma - I'm sorry you're feeling alone. I noticed that hardly anyone spoke of the anniversary yesterday, choosing to reflect on the events quietly in their own way.

It would be the same as me wanting 11 two zones away zone 8-12 rose shrubs there are jsut things I have no bussiness even attempting I do respect your sence of pride but as indicated you are setting yourself up to fail This very possible failure result is not what the 9 -11 roses are about I think you would do better making compromisies with flower colors and type

What a different world it was before 9/11. I was at work in downtown Minneapolis getting ready to help out with a United Way fundraiser event in our office. My co-worker in the cubical next to mine just stood up and said the World Trade Center had been hit by an airplane. As the saying goes, the commonest things happen most commonly, and I immediately thought of the World Trade building in St. Paul and the tiny downtown airport there and knew it must have been a terrible accident. Terrorism never even occurred to me. It wasn't until I went to the internet that I understood what was going on. I had a very close friend who was a flight attendant for United at the time and she called to let me know she was alright. She was in absolute shock, watching TV and telling me that a second airplane had hit the towers as we were on the phone. My husband was working in St. Paul at an office that faced southeast. He watched plane after plane head into landing formation towards the airport. The airplanes in the air were simply told to land at whatever airport was nearest and the huge Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport could take a lot of traffic. The rumors began that the Sears Tower was going to be hit next and the IDS Center in downtown Minneapolis, so our company told us all to go home. Out in the suburbs, my brother-in-law and nephew immediately went to donate blood when all of the eastern hospitals were gearing up for the thousands and thousands of wounded patients they were expecting. As we know, that didn't happen. I used to walk to and from work, and when we went back to work the next day, it was incredibly strange to hear the silence. No airplanes were allowed in the sky for several days and it was soooo quiet. The Sunday following the attack, church ended and people began leaving and the choir began singing The Battle Hymn of the Republic ("Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord....") and everyone just stopped in their tracks and began singing. It makes me tear up just to type this. A member of my book club made a strange statement that still haunts me. It was 6-9 months after 9/11 and she said some of her co-workers were STILL wearing small flag pins on their lapels every day. She couldn't understand it and thought that it was appropriate right after 9/11 but that enough time had passed and that people should now put that kind of thing away. Thank God people won't ever forget 9/11.

Firefighter is one of my very favorite HTs. I try to always have a few in a vase by the computer, because they perfume the area.

Anyone sell these as full plants? I never have had a bareoot rose ever live and I have tried over 10 over the years. On the otherhand I can root and start a new rose from a cutting which isn't the easiest procedure to do. Go figure...

Amazing pz. Maybe your lack of winter weather? I have planted bareroot early spring while all the plants are still dormant and they just take off. And I have yet to get a cutting to root. Full plants are probably the most reliable way though if conditioned to the outdoors.

Bareroots can be done in florida--it takes a little extra effort, I think. I soak mine for two days (or more). Then after planting, I mound the canes with mulch, and mist them as needed.

Edmunds is still in business though, the owners changed hands last year.

Edmunds Roses is not out of business. They sold to Jung's last year. They just updated their web site, that may be why you couldn't get in.

I tried all the tricks with bareroots though. Maybe it was questionable sources though. The first 5 were in those "bodybags" from Big Lots. They all died... Next were the 2 pack from Sam's Club. All the canes looked suspect but I was told to try anyways and they would spring back. Never did and the die back that was present on all the bareroot roses and I took the most healthiest of the batch. Once they died I alctually took them back for a replacement at Sam's Club. Found a set that looked healthier than the first 2 and they also died.

I do see the Edmonds site is back up. I don't see whether the "Remember Me" collection are bareoot or full plants (they don't specify).

Edmunds sells bareroots, usually grafted on Dr. Huey rootstock.

You have to get bareroots fresh, fresh, fresh, fresh. Most of the time from the big box stores, they have been sitting around for awhile and haven't been kept hydrated. Dehydration is death to bareroots. So, very green, very plump, fresh canes are critical. Next, the bareroots have to be rehydrated, so cover the roots with water and let them soak for a minimum of 24 hours, I like to let them soak for a few days (ok, sometimes it gets to weeks, but that's another story). Plant, and then you have to cover the canes until they break dormancy. You can cover with mounded soil or mulch or with a paper bag (cut out a hole from the bottom to let air in), but those canes still need to be kept moist. And water, water, water. Hope that helps.
