Visited The Oak Man

Saw a post from a member named quercus_macrocarpa so thought at the minimum this person would enjoy a few photos.

These are from Starhill Forest Arboretum in Petersburg IL at Author Guy Sternberg's home/offical arboretum of Illinois College, a month ago. You can read about Guy Sternberg here: Wikipedia Biography and the link to Starhill Forest Arboretum: Starhill Forest Arboretum

Quercus x sternbergii

"It's a nothospecies -- a stabilized hybrid of Q. shumardii x Q. buckleyi that's found naturally in a narrow band in Texas where the two species are barely sympatric. It was named for me by Professor Reinhold Luebbert of Germany in his World Compendium of oaks. Expect medium size pyramidal habit, small leaves and acorns, and brilliant scarlet fall color. It's perfectly hardy here for us once you get a little growth on it, but I'd protect small seedlings for a year or two." (we're near Peoria, IL)
