I am traveling out of town until the 13th, what to do with my WS?

I am traveling until the 13th and was not expecting our weather to be so warm just yet - and this is my first year WSing. I had thought to simply move the containers where they would not get any sun, water them well and wish for the best.... is that all I can do?

I only have 14 sprouted containers and about 20 unsprouted ones (I know, I will be sorry I didn't do more!). Would I be better off simply moving them to my garage for while I am gone? I have not taken the tops off yet, and they don't appear to be getting "fried" - the tiny seedlings are still good (I don't have any true leaves yet).

What to do? HELP!

Your plan of placing them in shade is good. Even dappled shade if you have such a spot. Don't put them in the garage - you'll be depriving them of some good rain if any comes your way.

I had the same situation in March-- left mine on the north side of a willow for three weeks. Most did beautifully including a couple dozen tomato seedlings. :D There was unusually little rain, so a few small jugs with shallower soil dried out, but they are reviving now.

My bed is 60% red cedar mulch (not nuggets) and about 40% maple leaf (leaf section is deeper than the mulch). I ran out of mulch a little over half way of covering this bed, so I had to finish with the leaves. The first thing I am gonna do starting tomorrow is pull off equal sections of mulch and leaf at the same time and mix it all up really well on my very large tarp and put back down, so in the end it will be a mixer of mulch and leaves. I won't be planting anything out until this is done. The back filling with potting soil is a great idea, but I don't have much left and I'm very low on funds. Maybe I'll see if I can wait? It may take me longer than anticipated to mix up the bed covering anyway. Melissa1977

Hi, BettyLu: Welcome to wintersowing! I think that because your yard gets its sun in the heat of the day, it still counts as full sun, or almost full sun. I think all the seeds you listed are tough plants that could hold their own against tree roots and like full sun, although I'm not certain about Culver's Root because I haven't seen it growing in enough spots to know. Oh, wait, Purple Rocket is not Dame's Rocket, I just saw the latin. Well, it's Dame's Rocket I was thinking about, sorry! You may have those seeds because you already have those plants, so I'd better come up with some other ideas, right? :) At the base of my tall silver maple, I have salvias fighting to establish themselves (no water for them in this, their 2nd year. I'm mean!) Tansy, nigella, Montauk Daisy, Northern Sea Oats, and daylily. You can wintersow or spring-sow daylily, but you have to wait 2-4 years for flowers. Goldenrod would do fine, I'm sure, and there are pretty cultivars out there like Fireworks, Golden Baby and Little Lemon. They're great for fall color. Asters, too. (Montauk Daisy as well). Agastache, like Anise Hyssop, grows like a weed--and seeds like one--but I love it, and so do the hummingbirds and honeybees and goldfinches. Echinaceas should also hold their own against maple roots--they do so well in hard-packed dry clay in my friend's yard! I'm sure I'll think of some more things later! The wintersowers are planning on doing a seed exchange, with Token hosting it, so you should join in! And there will be great group seed swaps over on the Round Robin forum, like the ones hosted by Miceyrey, Drippy, and Patty. Bakemom offers "newbie seed packs." And if your Culver's Root is purple, I want to trade with you! :)

Hi Barb, The dahlias are dwarf dahlias that are grown from seed. They also produce tubers at their roots and I'm going to save the tubers as well as collect seeds from them as well. The seeds for the dahlia fireworks where from a trade, as where the dahlia diablo seeds, but you can purchase them from thompson and morgan and they also have a new one called Collarette Dandy. I bought more seeds of the fireworks and collarette dandy from them when they where half price on sale. The dahlia stargazer where from seeds that I collected from my plants last year, the original seeds where also from a trade, but those dahlias did not come back and bloom the same as the original plants, beautiful just he same. I've never grown dahlias just from purchased tubers before, so don't know if they will come true to seed, but I would surmise that the flowers would produce seed pods and the seeds would germinate next year with something. Just don't know if it would be the same bloom. You could collect the seeds and give it a try and see what you get though, and you could post over on the dahlia forum and see what they say about your question. I love the torenia blue and white. Have managed to collect a few seeds, but don't know how the germination will be next year. The plants where WS from purchased seeds that where pelleted and the germination was very, very poor. Another WS sowed them for me, and she bought the seeds at swallotail last year. I checked on their site and the pic they show for the blue and white doesn't look like the one I have, but you can't trust pics that the seed places post of what the flower looks like. Fran

Hi all! Tikanis, yes, I started back yesterday, and will go until the first week of August. I've got an anatomy class and a psych class this time. The anatomy class is going to be hard, but cool. We're dissecting a bunch of stuff, and then we're traveling to a local medical school to observe an autopsy. (I think I'll bring a bib, and a knife and fork to mess with our prof before we go. Maybe a bottle of hot sauce as well! LOLOL!) The psych class is in an area that is under going renovations, and we don't have AC, and it.is.miserable. And, it was only 83 yesterday. We have a box fan going, but that makes it hard to hear him. I recorded the lecture, but all I can hear is an occassional words or two, and the droning of the fan. Ahh, well. :) Good luck on the survey; I've been worked on one before, and it was sooo stressful. And how cool to be that close to sea lions! Suzanne, gosh,you're got your plate full! I'd love to follow you around for a week, and see SP and the clucking girls! :) Deemarie, the wedding sounds like it was lovely! I'm very glad that things went wonderfully. :) Ivamae, I agree. Oh, that makes me feel better! Shall I still leave the tops on? I figured that if they weren't in the sun, I wouldn't need to worry about "cooking" them, right?

I will leave them where they can get rain, but be in the shade. Right now they are on a shelf unit on a north-ish facing deck that gets a bit of sun from around 9 till 11.

I just checked this morning and I have 5 more jugs with sprouts!!! Yay! It really does work! LOL One of them even has true leaves starting - I currently have the sprouted containers on the top shelf, but with this mornings additions, I will have to move them out from the 2nd and 3rd shelves so they are not shaded by the top shelf, won't I?

I can't imagine how different it will all look by the time I come back a week from today :-)

I'm in the same boat - I leave the 14th for a 9 day trip for work, coming back the 23rd. It's been so hot here and all my tops are off, and I've had to water daily to keep the soil wet. I'm planting out as many as I can see second leaves, thinking they'll have better chances in the ground than depend on my husband to check on them without implicit directions to on a daily basis! Luckily it's supposed to cool down after tomorrow, hopefully that will help.

Good luck with your babies - I'm sure they'll be fine!

I am leaving my 60ish sprouted/20ish unsprouted containers on Friday for 10 days. I'm not worried though, because I've done it successfully before using a bottom watering technique; The morning of my trip, I will water my containers well and put them in aluminum lasagna pans (from the dollar store). I'll then add about 2 inches of water to the pans. As long as my seedlings are in a shady spot, they can then handle 9 or ten days without me just fine.
