Iceberg might be nice. Should do well in your zone.

I have two Pope John Paul II white HT roses. One is in pretty much full sun and the other gets sun for about 8 hours per day and then is shaded. Both of them do quite fine for me in both places. I would think it would do okay for you in your case.
Besides, PJPII is a wonderfully healthy, vigorous, very fragrant, large bloomed white HT. I think it is the best pure white Ht on the market.
If you don't mind a bit of pink on the petals, Moonstone and Pop Warner have also been outstanding for me. You should consider them as well.

I second PJPII. Fragance is a plus. Give it 2 to 3 years to establish. I have Moonstone and Pop Warner. Both are nice roses. Moonstone is a work horse in my garden. Pop Warner is stingy, but beautiful blooms and bush is taller with thinner stems than Moonstone. Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestions, but I guess I didn't make clear what I need. The spot where I want to plant the rose does not get full sun for 8 hours, but maybe, at best, 5-6 hours. Then it is in light partial shade for most of the rest of the day. That is why I'm looking for a white rose that isn't as strong a sun-lover as most HTs are, one that might even like some light shade to protect it from our hot, burning afternoon/western sun.

PJPII is gorgeous, but as far as I can see, it needs more full sun than I can provide (I checked helpmefind also). And while Moonstone is lovely, she is much pinker than I'd want--even Pop WArner is a bit too much. I'm thinking more like a white rose or a white with just a hint of blush--at most. As for Iceberg, it doesn't seem to have that full HT look to its bloom--I was looking for a bloom more like Double Delight or Elle or Chrysler Imperial which are also planted along the perfume path. Or like Valencia which the white rose is going to replace. (Valencia's color just doesn't fit in there very well--I'm moving it to a diff. place in the garden.)

Helpmefind also says a couple of the suggested roses only have mild fragrance. Since they are going along a perfumed path, I'd like fairly strong perfume.

I'm sorry I didn't make all that clearer earlier. I do appreciate your suggestions and hope you can come up with some more ideas.

I'm pretty new to roses, but I think most roses prefer sun in the morning and shade in the afternoon, especially if you have hot summers. Also, most white flowers hold their color better (don't turn brown as fast) with some shade.

John F. Kennedy hybrid tea might do well for you. It has 5" blooms, is zone 6 and has good rebloom and good fragrance. Margaret Merril is a floribunda that is hardy to zone 5. It has 4" blooms, good repeat and very good fragrance. I got this information from Rogue Valley Roses.

I'm sure there are other roses that will do very well for you in your shady location. You might want to try some rose sites on the Internet. You can usually narrow it down to white, or shady, or good fragrance. Good luck on your search :)

Also, you might want to check Heirloom Roses on the Internet. They have some very nice roses and they're really good about answering questions you send them on e-mail.

They have Sheer Bliss, zone 5, which is a beautiful rose. Mostly white with pale pink in the center. Also check out White Diamond zone 6, and White Lightnin', zone 5. The first is a shrub rose that looks like a grandiflora and the second, I believe, is a grandiflora.

If you like any of these, you might want to e-mail them and ask how they will do in the shade. I just looked on the home page, under white roses. There are so many beautiful roses, I just wish they were a little hardier for my location! Have fun :)

I thought I did understand your posting and said that PJPII is the white HT rose I would try even in a less than ideal sun/shade situation. It is such a vigorous and healthy and beautiful rose I think it would be okay in your situation. Like I said in the first post, one of my plants is in a more shaded spot and depending on the time of year gets 8 or less hours per day of sun. The rest of the day is in very heavy shade. It still does just as well as the PJPII rose I have in a much sunnier location.
And, if it's perfume you are wanting PJPII has enough for two roses so that is not an issue with it. Since it is a shadier spot, you might consider just a LITTLE extra fertilizer on the roses planted there. I would use a mild liquid fertilizer like SuperThrive or Monty's Joy Juice which won't burn your roses roots--at least it never has harmed any of my 300 roses. And I use alot of Superthrive many times per year when I fertilize with my EZ-Flo fertilizer injector connected to each beds drip irrigation system. I count out one full teaspoon of SuperThrive per bush in that bed and put it in the injector bottle along with some other fertilizers and supplements which make up my John's Jungle Juice personal fertilizer recipe.
For me and a few other rosarians who have asked me for the recipe really like the results when using the Jungle Juice on their roses.
My sister also grows roses in Dallas, TX and she gave it the Jungle Juice name, LOL....and she uses it alot as well.

I have an area where just by happenstance I planted several very fragrant roses including PJPII. I love to just go sit there and relax, read, or whatever as the rose fragrance is strong and divine right there.

Kate-most roses only need about 6 hours of sun to thrive. The 5-6 hours of sun you say you get is fine for PJPII or just about any HT.

Pink Promise is new to my garden, but has been exceptional. I have one growing in a spot where it gets afternoon sun only. It has done well, although the one getting all day sun has been somewhat more vigorous.

Pink Promise has a scent that is like apple, with a hint of Tea Rose.

Sheer Bliss is a winner in my yard as well, but not sure how it would do in limited sun...

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm quite enamored of Sheer Bliss, but in looking over the pics at helpmefind, am questioning whether it sometimes gets a bit too flushed with pink. My concern is that it would be next to Elle which is an "off" shade of pink--I guess you would call it a peachy pink with some apricot highlights at times. I'm afraid the two roses would clash sometimes.

PJPII is gorgeous, isn't it. I love those well-shaped blooms. One concern I have is that because it is not a blend, the pure white might be a somewhat glaring look compared to the other HTs there which are all blends. And I'm still concerned about helpmefind going out of its way to say PJPII should be in "full sun"--since my HT will have to tolerate somewhat less than the minimum recommended sunlight.

However, either one may very well be my choice. Luckily I have some time to mull it over before I need to order.

Any other candidates? All suggestions are welcome.

I would think cold hardiness is at least if not more important. What about 'Pristine', not pure white but purported to be quite hardy. Or some of the Kordes such as 'Ice Girl'. 6 hours is plenty of sun here...but that is sunny CA, not KS.

Why not try one and see, maybe plant it in a huge pot sunk in the ground, and move it to a sunnier spot if it declines after 3 or 4 years?

Garden Party might do if it doesn't get too much pink blush for you. I had one for many years in a large pot on my front porch. It got only morning sun but rebloomed very well and was disease resistant and fragrant. I took a cutting and now have a plant in a sunnier spot where it doesn't do as well.

JUst looked up the newest suggestions at helpmefind. Gruss an Aachen and Pristine are so lovely, but they don't seem to have much fragrance, and the comments on Pristine were quite negative (bloom falls apart in a day or two; disease problems), while Gruss doesn't quite have that classic HT look I'd like. I think the blended colors might work very well, however, in the spot I will be planting my new rose. In fact, I really like the way those blended white/pastels both contrast with and blend in with the other HTs I have planted along the "perfumed path."

Garden Party is another attractive choice, though I'm not sure how fragrant it is.

HoovB--thanks for thinking about cold-hardiness. Not too much of a problem here--I'm in the southern part of KS, in fact, practically in Oklahoma. Most HTs seem to survive here, though it is true I often have to spring-prune them quite low.

Another white you might consider is Cryatalline. I have a six year old bush that really produces lots of very well formed ice white large blooms. Mine is lightly fragrant but at times you have to kind of search for the scent especially in the summer heat. The bush gets about 5 1/2' tall and doesn't seem to spread very much. The flowers are usually produces on nice long stems and make good vase flowers. Once in a while I get a nice four banger spray from her that is quite pretty.
Lots of people grow Crystalline for her exhibition flowers and she has won many Queens. She is also getting a name for herself with some hybridyzers as she passes on some good qualities to her offspring.
Some have reported disease problems, but my Crystalline stays very healthy and vigorous except for just a little anthracnose spotting late in the Fall in damp weather. Of course being white, the thrips like it quite well so I spray with Merit usually just one time per year on all my light colored roses and that takes care of them.
My Crystalline gets about 6-8 hours of full sun and is in dappled shade the rest of the day and still does quite well.
