Snow White and 7 dwarfs rose bed from Euro Desert roses!!!

While looking through the Euro Desert email and all the beautiful roses I found roses named after all the 7 dwarfs along with a Snow White. So I wandered around my yard trying to find a spot to make a new bed named "Snow White & the 7 Dwarfs". I thought the idea sounded so cute but I managed to talk myself out of it. Anyways, Euro Desert has their site back up if anyone is interested in adding anything for next spring. I may still make myself that bed while dear hubby has his head turned. Shhhh, don'e tell!! I have Snow White and 4 of the dwarves, anchored by Goldilocks on an arch, in one row of my rose field. This area gets a lot of attention, as parents visiting the garden point out the names to their kids. When I rearrange a bit, I plan to move Jiminy Cricket over there with them.

Since you reminded me, I should go check out the new web site and order the other three dwarves to complete my collection.

Hello fellow rose friends, Thank you for your recommendations. I had about 80+ roses in 2010. Unfortunately, I lost about 1/2 of them due to a winter freeze. At that time, I was overseas, and my DH did not realize that the roses needed to be sheltered. I was heartbroken. I am disabled due to fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, and a myriad of health issues. Although roses do not alleviate chronic pain, they give me immense joy and peace. I know this may sound a bit strange, but roses instill hope in me to combat my health problems. charleney: I agree that shipping charges are astronomical for West Coast buyers. USPS/UPS keep raising the prices each year which negatively affects small businesses and their customers. Sigh! I live in Redmond. Puyallup is quite a distance from here. With soaring gas prices, the commute to and fro to Puyallup may even out the shipping charges (a bit of an exaggeration, but you know what I mean). Perhaps, I'll wait a bit longer for RU to drop the sale prices; although the downside of waiting is that most of prized roses are sold out and the selection is limited. Okay, so I pulled two of the four tonight, found nice strong green babies with at least three regular leaves (not including seedling leaves) to graft to and then got the shakes working with something so small! LOL! I cut and then taped carefully making sure that the cut edges were tight together. Now we wait. They are so small. But I figure if they will die anyway, why not try it now and see what happens? The only loss I will really have is the fine strapping young 'uns I chose to slice into to try to save the white ones. I really picked out the two best out of seven hundred or so. I was spending time (obviously) looking over all of my babies with a critical eye tonight and was amazed at how much I love looking at them! Even with seven hundred to look at. I have to remind myself not to go crazy trying to pamper them and poke at them and water and water. Sometimes I worry the poor things, I am sure. I am one of those plant people who have so little patience! :-) So ... as for grafting these little guys ... anyone want to take a stab at how long, in their tender green baby condition, it might take before I should check on the grafting process and see if it is working? Months? A week or two? I have never ever grafted anything, so I don't have a CLUE. I will of course research it, but I was just wondering if anyone had a suggestion or two? I also wonder if the white seedlings will (if they share nutrients) turn green by picking up some chloraphyll? I kind of hope they don't. I would love for them to STAY white! :-) Peace ~ Ang

I used to go for 'bests' and then I learned about rootstocks. A lot of my bought locally roses were on Dr. Huey rootstock. They didn't do well. They didn't do well because my soil is an acidic red clay with some top soil on it, but the business roots of the rose are going to go down into that clay for the moisture and nutrients. Dr. Huey thrives in slightly alkalin soil. That's why it was THE rootstock of choice for growing roses for resale and that was done in the alkaline playa lake beds of inland California. For Virginia roses....there are acidic red clays in a number of places. There are also sands, and there may be some alkalin soils. In your neighborhood do you see roses that have reverted to Dr. Huey? Do you see wild Rose multiflora (zone 7 Virginia would have had multiflora blooming back in early May. Next question: are you willing to spray fungicides every two weeks. Last question: Maybe take a chance with R. x fortuniana rootstock, unless you get serious freezes in some winters. There are two Hybrid Tea roses that I find to be all but bullet proof, and they are pretty in different ways. La Traviata: no scent, healthy foliage without spraying, and carnation like deep red blooms that do not have the classic HT form, but which look like carnations and last on their long straight stems for two weeks, even in summer. (The blooms and stems are so strong, they hold water after summer rains and it needs to be dumped out or the petals will stew in the summer sunlight. The MacCartney Rose: Scent!!! strong pink, open well. Strong bushes that thrive without spraying. Not a show rose, but it's so good it doesn't need to be. Glows in the sunlight when it's backlit by morning or evening sunlight.

Thanks for asking the question Strawchicago. I hadn't smelled it yet since it is still low so I just went out and took a sniff. It is a pretty, light, rosy scent. We just had a sprinkle of rain so don't know if that affected it. I will smell it again tomorrow when it is dry. But I took some more photos for you. Above All bloom clusters. I think what appeals to me about it is the bloom clusters (which I love) is how cheerful the blooms look. They look like they are having a party. All these glowing beautiful blooms look like this under cloudy skies. While I was out I also snapped two more pics of Denver's Dream since I know you said you liked that one also. This second round of blooms is on the first longer canes that it has had. The Fairy is also starting to get going. It has been a late bloomer also.

OK Miss Northern Enabler, a.k.a. TJ, it sounds so adorable doesn't it. I do want to do it bad but I was so trying not to order any more roses and start filling in more with other perennials. waaaaaaaa! If only I had tons of sunny space to work with but I don't. waaaaaaa!!!! Anyways, I was wanting some more english roses so I will probably hold off for a while anyways. Hope you are doing well! Judy, I blame you....I logged on to their new website and ordered 4 roses....all because I opened your thread. So I would feel much better if you at least ordered something.....LOL. I guess I enabled myself.

We were actually just at the Euro Roses garden and saw all of these growing(with a dwarf by each one!) They are pretty roses. I think you should plant them.

Ok Mendocino rose, Lucky you to get to visit them in person. I will tell dear hubby you told me I really need to plant them. It does sound like a cutesy bed. Judy

Burlington Roses has Cinderella. Burling had a vendor booth at the National Rose Show in Palm Springs and I picked one up there.

I forgot about Cinderella ... I have her living in a pot. I got her from The Uncommon Rose years ago. She's beautiful, and you'll love her.
