Transplanting small white spruce....

Not sure when, but at least a couple of years ago my dad planted a patch of white spruce - about 8 of them in a 5' circumference. He passed away a bit ago and those trees have been left to grow, most of them are now around 3' high with 1 4'. The are probably about 6-8" apart and I'd like to transplant some of them if possible. So I have several questions:

1. Are the trees too close together to transplant? I'm worried that if I dig up one or several of them, I might damage the root system of all of them.

2. If the roots are too intertwined, then would it be best to just cut off all of them except the strongest one so it survives?

3. If I can transplant them, what would be the best way to do this? This is at my mom's place, northern Wisconsin, not zone 7 like where I live.

Thanks for any input!!!

Bob
