planted out first time ever!

I've been nursing my little seedling babies for several nights now. We've had cold temps off and on and I just don't trust the weathermen. 6 degrees within freezing is just too close to gamble on! lol!

today, I created a new-old bed in an unused corner by my house and translplanted some iris that haven't bloomed in a couple of years. I'm guessing it was due to lack of sun.

Also filled the extra space with ws sunflowers and celosia and alyssum. It's definitely going to be colorful whether or not it all "matches", I don't really even care.

I planted them by the hos method and it was totally enjoyable. I'm still a little nervous about our night-time temps for the next two days so plan to cover with sheets. I think of all my WS buddies while planting out and am so glad to have you all to relate to with this venture.

I love my little plants too. I have them all covered up and bundled and am worrying about the temps also. This is an amazing group of people on this website. Everyone is so nice. If I asked for a package of seeds, I got fifty.
These are all just wonderful people in a time when wonderful is hard to find.
P.S. I hope we aren't frozen by morning! Keep you fingers crossed. Sybil

Good for you!:) I cant wait to plant out,but I am glad I haven't yet,we will be getting down to near freezing Tuesday and I will be pampering them on my covered porch. I have my annuals and perennials separated for such an occasion,I put my annual sprouts inside my portable greenhouse,pull it on to my covered porch and cover it with a car blanket DH bought for the car,but I confiscated! It is really better for my purposes than his...lol..

So glad to hear you are enjoying this also,it is my first year too and I agree, the people are just awesome! :)

The only way to loosen clay permanently is to turn it into loam (nice topsoil). The recipe is clay + sand + composted organic matter (humus) of roughly equal parts of each. You do not say WHY you wish to put large rocks in the ditch. It should be a compelling reason if it's going to compensate for the damage it will likely do. While it won't make it watertight the day you do it, over time it will cause the ditch to silt up to the level that the rocks create. Even a few rocks will make the ditch silt up faster than it normally would. It is not necessary to remove rocks from the soil in order to grow grass. Unless the rocks are sticking up and in the way, they will not impede grass growth or maintaining the lawn. You could deal with them on a case-by-case basis when you plant shrubs and trees. To load multiple pictures in a single post, don't use the "choose file" button provided by GardeWeb. Instead, upload the pictures to a photo-hosting site (like flickr, etc.) There, look for links to "share" the pictures where, if you follow the path, you'll find html code for each picture. Copy the code and paste it into your message. (There may be several different codes for different size pictures so it might require some experimentation in order to find the right code. When you "preview" the message, the picture will show up the same as it will post, so you have an opportunity to find the right code and fix it before posting.

I think digging the plant, cutting back the soft tissue and then soaking in either a chlorox solution or hydrogen peroxide would give the same results. There are daylilies, in fact families of daylilies that are prone to rot. They usually rot when they get too hot. Water conducts heat, so hot and wet is conducive and as beds age and compact, there is less air circulation in the soil, making the beds hotter. There is a group fungicides that have proven effective in preventing and curing crown rot. The most popular brands within the group are K-Phite and Agri-Fos. You can use them for foliar application as a preventative, or drench the soil in and around an affected plant. I treat in place now, don't dig anymore. Of course, you have to be quick to catch crown rot. It kills very quickly. With the drought we had this year, a friend with an AHS Display garden lost over 60 plants. I lose a few every year. I try most daylilies at least twice, but if they rot both times, that's it; because there's always the chance that they were infected by some external source. Try to encourage the plant to send roots deep where it's cooler, rather than shallow beds that get hotter. Also overdoing organic material will cause rot. The heat generated by the organic material breaking down (composting) can be too much after a good rain in the hottest part of the summer. Don't apply new mulch in late spring or summer, same problem. Sorry for rambling! Ed

Congartulations. Its a great feeling to get one of these plants to bloom especially for the first time. They come in so many colors and sizes its hard not to be addicted to growing them. Good luck and enjoy it! My first pluemria to bloom bloomed around late august or early september and its indoors now and still blooming, so if your lucky you might have some buds still opening in time for the holidays.

That's a fair point. In Montreal, your growing season is pretty much May-September. We're at the end of May, and you're not even sure you have seedlings. So you've used up about a quarter of your growing season looking for seedlings. Unless you're wedded to these particular plants, buying larger plants at this time might be smart. No, tomatoes don't take a long time to grow as seedlings, as long as they're kept warm (70-75F), and they get plenty of light. But even then, it'll be several weeks before you're ready to plant out.

Very cool! It's such a feeling of accomplishment when you get some seedlings in the ground.

I've planted out a few things as well ... dianthus, snapdragons, english daisies, bachelor buttons, and a few others. I'm waiting on the more tender annuals. I brought in my tomatoes and zinnias last night, and will probably keep in them in tonight as well. Everything else I'm hoping will tough it out.

I really enjoy this forum as well. Everyone is so nice, helpful, and knowledgable and don't make people feel stupid for asking questions. I don't think there's a nicer garden forum out there, and I've learned so much.
