what happens to trees/plants if a nursery goes out of business

If a nursery or a wholesale nursery goes out of business and they have many trees and plants on thier property, what happens to all of that when they go out of business?

Some times they go to Restore stores (Habitate for Hunanity).

Last weekend we got 6 azaleas for $5/each.

There are a couple of old nurseries around here that have grown up into a thicket.

"One word comes to mind... "hoarder". Actually, the word that came to my mind was "dedication". That is an impressive amount of work. Maybe it would be easier to just build a raised bed over that section of driveway? When I was living in a home with little usable land, I looked for unused land nearby, and contacted the owners. You can often strike a deal in exchange for the right to garden, such as rent, property upkeep, or sharecropping. A previous employer allowed me to garden behind the plant, he liked the added security I provided after hours. I gardened on a utility easement, in exchange for cleaning up trash on the property, and on part of a vacant field, in exchange for keeping the rest of the field mowed. I've spent about 30 years gardening on other people's property, usually with water provided... because of those arrangements, my children grew up eating a lot of fresh vegetables. Food for thought.

Ordered 4 Windmill Palms on June 8, 2012 from Aaron's Farm. Three were 5-6 ft. and one was 4-5 ft. They were suppose to be ball and burlap. Paid $534 on credit card. Received invoice showing almost $900 and wrong address. During ordering I asked if they were the same as TyTy. I was told they were a sister company but they were not "that kind of business". Unfortunately, I believe people. I was told 7 day UPS ground. Eleven days later they shipped. I received supstantually smaller trees than I ordered. Also they were bare root, poor health, and one wrong tree. I've wasted a lot of time trying to contact them, they never tell you the truth. I've been told I got the wrong shipment. Todd (supervisor) said he would re-ship the whole order on the 27th of June. I called to get a tracking number and after I rebutted all their untrue statements I was told they didn't have a tracking number. But, Steven who answered the phone was 100% sure my correct trees had been re-shipped. They never arrived. At the same time, I received a message from the GA BBB that Ryan (Aaron's manager) had processed a refund for all except $150, due to me receiving the wrong order. I haven't received a refund. Furthermore, why should I pay $150 for the wrong trees. I had specific type and size requirments for my landscaping project. I have since replaced the trees from a local nursery ( Country Gardens in Memphis). Far better quality and price. AARON'S IS REALLY TYTY. THEY OPERATE UNDER MANY MANY ALIASES. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY. TO BE SAFE, I RECOMMEND YOU DON'T PURCHASE ANY PLANTS FROM GEORGIA P.S. I've saved their wrong trees in case they want them back, but I don't think they are going to survive.

Hi, Well, I guess I'll be the only one not sorry to see them go. They were still a chain, maybe not as big as H.D. but a chain nonetheless. In my area they had the same old type of plants year after year. Nothing ever new or different. Usually most of them were under watered and always a day a way from dropping dead. Their tropical nursery in the greenhouse was a joke of meally bug infested plants (and I'd like to meet the person that called their twigs in a cup bonsai). :) The only thing I went there for was tools and fertilizer. They never had bulbs out at the correct time for planting and when it was the right time they already had Christmas stuff out replacing them for months. I'd feel bad if it were a Mom and Pop place. I know a NICE Mom and Pop place that was wonder and DIFFERENT species that doesn't show up every where. I'd be heart broken to see them go. Luckily I have other places to go - a few nice places in NJ. Sorry to those that don't. Just my opinion... I could be wrong. K

i used to buy plants all summer long ... and hold them over until the fall planting period in my MI ... i would hold them in bright shade.. so black pots would not heat the roots in sun ... z5 is highly divergent.. in my ground freeze area... most things.. but for oaks.. can be planted in fall ... and then ground freeze holds them in suspended animation until spring ... in spring.. plant so that there is 6 to 8 weeks of dormancy.. root growth.. before the heat of summer hits ... which for me.. was basically april ... [getting into may.. with the stuff you cant kill] .. which is just as problematic ... as nobody is selling anything until later may .. whats that all about ... ken

I would imagine if the business owners didn't flee under cover of darkness with huge debts, they may have made arrangements to sell the material to another enterprise, or may hold auction for it to recoup some pennies on the dollar. I can't imagine if a company knew in advance it would be closing that they didn't make serious attempts to sell down their inventory.

There's an entire company - quite large and successful - that is used by creditors to auction nursery stock. I can't remember their name but for a while I was visiting their website somewhat regularly...there's pretty much 1-3 wholesalers or nursery retailers in bankruptcy, somewhere in the country, at any given time. I think they have a smaller competitor as well. Sometimes the banks try to publicize the auction themselves. When I was in the PNW in 2011...just a random week in winter...there were 2 dead wholesale nurseries in or near the Willamette Valley I could have visited. I think I just found them through random googling. However it wasn't very practical for someone traveling because I would have had to have a shovel to dig my own stock and a way to keep it alive for the long trip home. And besides, for single purchases by "end users", they weren't offering much of a discount. It made more sense to support a struggling but still trading nursery, which I did by buying some stuff at Stanley & Sons.
