Anyone else have roses thumb their noses at frost?

Hello;

This is my first fall with roses, and my fiance and I were troubled to see them putting on new growth in mid October; we tried to change their minds by feeding them super phosphate. Anyway, we've had 2 frosts since then (mid 20's), and on most of the roses the very new growth was killed, but two of them didn't care At All - Burgundy Iceberg lost its flowerbuds but no new growth, and Lime Sublime didn't even have its open flowers die. Anybody else have plants that seem impervious to light frosts? And, ah, which plants might those be? ;)

I don't believe that either rose is more sheltered than the others; if anything BI is the most exposed. Is this normal behavior? I wasn't aware that either were hardier strains, but perhaps they are. Is it okay that Lime Sublime is out there blooming right now, or should I take my shears and ask it to think differently?

Our rose 'Perfect Moment' seems to have no clue that evenings temps have been around 28 for the past few weeks. Cold fall night time temps for sure. The other roses are showing some temperature wear and tear but Perfect Moment just looks as pretty as it did all summer. A fun rose.

Wow, Kate, what a pretty rose! Thank you for the info. Is its red more burgundy, or bright red? I really don't feel I can trust the coloring in some photos.

Also, I'm glad to know my roses aren't somehow really off with their lifecycle...

My condolences to you who have had loses. Most of the grafts on my HT's are 6" below grade. Any rose I have dug up has gone own root. They have survived for over 10 years and always bounce back from winter. Still, this is the first time in many years that most of them have died back to the ground. And, as Buford mentioned, there's a lot of cane that looked OK a few weeks ago that has subsequently died. But, there is lots of basal growth to cheer me up. I guess I should acknowledge my two HT's which have survived with a lot of green cane: Heirloom and New Zealand. Go figure...

Yummy eye-candy! I think "obsessed" fits for me. I cannot pass up a seed stand or catalog, look at take-out as a way to get containers for winter-sowing, generally have "gardener's hands," and the shelf above my kitchen sink is filled with plants in various stages of sprounting or rooting. Not to mention my tiny patio, that has scads of containers, plants and garden paraphanalia. Oh, and there's my dining room, where the tropicals in pots come to keep warm on the nights the temps dip into the teens. . .And that's not even talking about my actual garden! :) Yep, I've got it, too! LOL

LL those are all very pretty colors! I've finally decided to take a chance on roses again as I see so many pretty ones here. However I didn't order any as we are redoing our garden and I need to move a lot of plants to make space for them. I want them near the patio so the deer are less likely to get to them. So hopefully there will be some roses left at the garden centers when I'm ready to plant them. I've made a long list of very hardy roses so I might be lucky to get a few I like. If they are in the ground sometime in May they should be OK. Our last frost date is beginning of June. We still have thoroughly frozen ground so can't do much for awhile but plan.

twrosz, I hope it is as good as folks say. I fortunately got one of 8 the nursery brought in. Slimy, we were very fortunate to miss most of the hostile weather the rest of the country got. Our frost is mostly out of the ground and I have been able to get all my bare roots that have arrived planted.

My Louise Odier buds out very early in the spring and seems to be completely oblivious to late season freezes that kill any early buds on my other roses. It's like she has her own private stock of antifreeze.

Yes, this is a pretty rose isn't it. You know mine really have been moved around a lot and probably not given enough sun and next year I have plans to really nurture these babies. I love the color though but for me it is somehat difficult to describe.

In our garden it is not red. I would not describe it as burgundy or even red-ish. Kind of a deep orangy color.

Someone who has a really vigorous 'Perfect Moment' rose with some great pictures are Digger and Deb. If you feel like doing a search with the roses name I expect you will be treated to some of their photos.

Kate, that is a VERY pretty rose! I have alot of roses still blooming but I went ahead and mulched anyway because this is the time of year I need three of me! my niece wanted to cut hers all the way down & I told not to because the freeze we had last night & are going to have again tonight would kill the tops.

Thanks! If you can overlook my blurry, clarity challenged photos that is. I'm asking for a new camera for Christmas which will hopefully nip my picture taking issues in the bud. Bad pun, sorry.

I agree with you about cutting back now. Just too late in the season. I plan to do some dead heading and that's it. Besides soil amending I aim to leave my roses be until springtime.
