Actual temperature vs 'feels like'

Hi,

There was a discussion of this but I wonder if there are any scientific-minded on here who might weigh in.

Someone had said that the "feels like" temp, which perhaps? is the same as "wind chill" only applies to how it feels to humans. Ok, true, a petunia cannot moan aloud about how cold it is, but I wonder if the "feels like" temp doesn't have some other scientific basis and affect our plants.

Anybody know?

Ellen: I knew that last thread about this wasn't going to satisfy you! Hahahaha. I was the one who posted, saying that I protect the babies based on wind chill temp.

One poster's response struck a chord that perhaps it's a mammalian phenomenon and we're attributing human characteristics to plants. Made sense to me in some way. After all, I don't worry about wind chill with any of the established stuff, shrubs, trees, etc.

Maybe what we're doing is reacting to the "baby, tender, newborn" aspect of the WS'd sprouts. They look vulnerable so we assume they are. I freely admit to it. I'd place a baby polar bear in front of a fire when it's cold out (for me).

We got to 70F here yesterday!!! It was so nice outside. No coat, or long sleeves and I actually saw people riding bikes and jogging in SHORTS! It was like the twilight zone, people are wearing shorts in February in the NYC metro and were comfortable! Everybody was really enjoying the weather. I wish the warm air could stay, but today is MUCH colder and very very windy. The week overall doesnt look too bad. Days in the 40s, one or 2 in the 50s. 2 nights will be in the low to mid 20s so I will be protecting my palms from that and unfortunately there is a chance that snow snow will mix in with the rain forecasted for Tuesday. But spring is definitely almost here! I might be seeing things, but I could have sworn that I saw some cherry trees blooming here! The buds on the trees weren't even there 2 weeks ago, now the buds are very notable from a distance on many street trees. And there is only one tiny pile of snow on my lawn. 3 weeks ago that pile was as tall as me! Very windy today and hopefully power outages wont be widespread. -Alex

Wow, love that sink. It was just waiting for you! I'm glad you decided on the stainless. I just don't think white would look right with that sink! Plus, I think it's hard to get white cabinets to look good with white appliances. Slight variances in whites can make the appliance have a yellow cast. Especially those white plastic handles. As far as cleaning stainless, I've found that some of the cleaners they tell you to use to clean stainless make them harder to keep clean than just windex. Some of the "stainless" cleaners leave a greasy residue that attracts dust. I have a Kitchen Aid fridge with stainless panels and they are no problem at all to keep clean. My stove and DW are also stainless and I just wipe them off when I wipe off the counters. Can't wait to see your glass knobs. Please post some pictures as you get things installed. I'm sure it's going to be beautiful.

I will have a robotic cleaner (see my other post asking for help in selecting one). The pool also has an automatic cover which must be closed at all times except when people are actually using the pool because it is our only safety system (no fence). Solar PV is not a good investment, except for cases where there are rebates that make the system essentially free (which basically means someone else's electricity or taxes are going up to pay for your system). Besides pumping is only a tiny component of the energy consumption of a pool. Far larger is the cost of heating. I believe this is true even in warm climates but its certainly true here in Portland, OR even if you are only using the pool during the summer season. To that end I've spend a significant amount of attention on this area. Rather than having a gas heater or dedicated heat pump I've gone with a tubular heat exchanger that heats the pool using the same residential heat pumps the house uses for heating and cooling. This not only avoids buying duplicate equipment, which saves significant capital expense, it permitted me to upsize the exchanger (at a modest cost) so that I can heat when pumping at only 16-20 gpm. Although I've chosen to go with a VF pump for flexibility and ease of programming (plus the additional efficiency that an ECM pump affords, particularly at low speeds) the result is a system that can run at one very slow speed. This is extremely important because it means the techniques I've employed could be applied to the broader market where cost is important consideration by just swapping out the VF to a very low HP single speed pump or dual speed pump. The pumping cost would be significantly higher than using the VF but the overall system cost would not be that much different for most regions since heating cost swamps pumping cost. This would be a very good low cost solution, certainly far better than the way most systems are designed today (run at a high flow rate for a few hours a day). Finally it provides and excellent solution to a problem of another poster...how to equip a pool that needs to run off grid. If power is scarce one simply cannot do much better than running an ECM motor equipped pump at very slow speed 24/7 and heating with solar. The capital cost is higher than other designs but when you don't have access to the grid that doesn't matter.

Have you tried running the pump at a higher speed to see if it faults then? at 7lb pressure I wouldnt think theres a lot of flow resistance to cause the pump to labor. Interesting-though, Where are all the usual pentair guys that claim everyone elses pumps are junk??? I like my pentair products,and think you have made a good purchase, but have also experienced issues with my recent pentair purchases. I beleive you will be fine once you replace the pump, and I think the explanation you are being fed is likely BS. Im very curious to see how this sorts out Davgevg

I'm kinda like that with my plant babies. Hopefully from this point on, will not have to worry about wrapping, will have to figure out this "last frost date" matter.

Wind does affect plants to some degree, though. As pointed out in the MP3 above, it can cause wind burn. For seedlings in a jug, that is probably minimized, but after planting out it could be a factor.

Another aspect would be formation of frost. I understand this better than I can explain it but, frost formation is determined by the amount of moisture vapor present (i.e. humidity) and the amount of air moving around an object.

Wind Chill is based on the cooling factor of wind on the human body. What wind chill is a measure of is the amount of body heat which is sucked away from your body by air movement. Since plants don't really generate much heat through metabolism (at least, to the best of my knowledge.) I don't think that wind chill itself would be a factor.

By the way....does anyone else hate the new phrase "feels like"? I know that I do. Wind chill is much more descriptive. "Feels like" sounds really stupid to me. I refuse to use such a dumbed down expression in my daily conversation. Just my opinion... I mean no offense to the OP or anyone on else on this forum. :)

yes, I wondered if "feels like" meant wind chill. I guess somebody thot we were too dumb to know what wind chill meant.

anyway, onetwo, your explanation makes sense to me.

Folks: This was good info. Now, at least, I feel like I have another aspect of WSing understood. It makes a big difference here where I am--will save me from bringing jugs into the garage on many a night.
