What to do with onion sets?

I just purchased some red, white, and yellow onion sets. I thought that I could just put them in the ground along with my garlic, and I would get onions next year. After reading the allium forum, I am a bit confused.

I've read that onions are biennials, that sets only produce green onions, that sets will flower, etc. And none of it is making sense to me.

I guess I just want to know what will happen if I go ahead and plant my sets? What will they do next year, and will they ever have the potential to become bigger onions like I buy at the store?

I'm hoping for some onion clarification from some of you onion experts. Please and thank you!!
