What to do with onion sets

Stella_z6

Hi there,

I bought a bag full of yellow onion sets about a month ago. It's now June 2, and I'm in Toronto (zone 6a-ish). I have been reading here that it's too late to plant onion sets, unless I'm happy to use the growths as scallion greens. I may plant a few sets for this purpose and see how it goes.

My question is whether it would make sense to hang onto the sets until the fall, and plant them then. Will the sets keep until then? If they do keep and I plant them, would they overwinter in the ground and be ready for harvesting in the spring?

Many thanks for your thoughts.
