Magnolia tree trimming help

warriors

I Purchased a home in Southern California about 6 years ago that has a huge Magnolia tree. Not knowing much about them we had a tree trimmer come and shape the tree about three years ago; it seems from what I read I shouldn't have trimmed it at all. The tree is a beautiful tree and I wouldn't consider trimming it again (I don't mind the leaf raking) but our neighbor put in a pool and I believe some leaves are blowing into it. We really noticed the reduction and slow return of blooms from the last trim. What is the rule of trimming?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
