Help with Rose Protection Question

Just two days ago, I started preparing my Westerland rose for her slumber by just constructing a wire cage around her and then wrapping that cage with 3 layers of burlap. I did NOT add any leaves yet! She's still pretty green though, and now I'm wondering, will the burlap around her stop her from reaching a good dormancy now? I need her to go into dormancy soon and she looks as good as in July! Should I just unwrap the burlap and save it for later on? Or just keep it on and be patient and wait for her?

She is a first season planting this past spring.

If there's air between the cage and 'Westerland', it'll go dormant. FYI - I tried protecting 'Westerland' the 1st 3 years I had it.... still died to the ground every year. Now I don't bother protecting it at all. Dies to the ground, but comes back as a 4' shrub by July.

Mine has grown a good 10 ft long main cane this first year! One long octopus cane lol. Wonder what next year will bring then lol. It actually grew a little longer by this time November.

No problem - i'm zone 3 (Tropical 3, did you notice? LOL). I'm pretty sure that way in the archives there's a thread about moving roses. I did move Hansa many years ago but it didn't sulk as badly as Champlain, or Therese Bugnet, which I moved earlier this summer. She still isn't happy and looks awful. Hansa came around and is crazy big now - has world domination issues! I'm hoping these will recover as well as it did - or almost, since I don't need more roses wanting to take over the world!

Shade cloth would help a lot for searing sun. You could also try to build some kind of wind block around them to keep the canes from drying out. I would also recommend spraying them off with water daily if possible. I know everyone says not to get the foliage wet but roses do absorb and lose water through their leaves so a spraying would help them stay hydrated. It also keep the leaves clean so they can feed the plant. No, for most types of roses a winter chill is not necessary. There are a few classesI can think of gallicas and rugosas off the top of my head, that won't set bloom without a chill but not that many. They probably don't sell those locally for you anyway because they wouldn't bloom for the nurseries either.

I've been nursing a Westerland for 7 years now. Like brother cadfael I do nothing and it dies back to the ground each winter. Mine does send out longer canes but they only bloom once. As long as it lives I'll keep trying.
I agree the burlap will not affect it going dormant as long as the space between the wire cage and the bush stays clear.
