Tuderte, Is the area where those roses are planted inclined by any chance? This sucker seems to be growing out of a shallow root not out of the rootstock stem or main root mass. I guess it could happen regardless how deep you planted the bud union. If the soil is inclined this is easier to happen. If humidity stays at a shallow soil level (as often happens with clay) this is also more probable to happen. Also this could happen if there was a disturbance of some kind to the roots. (like a stray adze hit..) That sucker looks to me like a canina but I couldn't tell a Laxa sucker from another variety of canina if it hit me on the face.. I sympathise with your wind problem, we get exactly the same, only in our case the northerlies come in the salted not plain variety.. So do the southerlies btw..

Below is the info. that Floweraremusic (zone 5) in Washington gave on her 2020 winter-survival. She has alkaline clay with rocks at bottom like mine & less snow in winter: "My hardiest roses are the Canadians. John Davis, John Cabot, Wm. Baffin, Morden Sunrise, Morden Blush and Morden Centennial, Victorian Memory aka Isabelle Skinner, also a Canadian rose. All these only have tiny bit of tip damage and bloom a lot with no special care. Also, my Hybrid Perpetuals only have tip damage after winter. Magna Charta, Mrs. John Laing, Black Prince and Marchesa Buccella. The only negative is they don’t have long enough cutting stems. All my Austins are very hardy. The one I just can not grow is Jude. Leonardo da Vinci is super hardy and always healthy. Quietness comes through winter very well. Even Rouge Royale survives beautifully. Cinderella Fairy Tale is very hardy. Gruss an Aachen also. Ballerina and Marjorie Fair are both hardy. Poseidon, Princess Charlene de Monaco and Crazy Love didn’t do as well as I’d hoped. The surprise losses this year are Quicksilver, and Dames de Chenonceau who is left with only 1 cane. Versigny is also reduced down to almost nothing. This was a mild winter with very little snow. Rooting roses teach me what cause black canker on canes: 1) Acidic & too wet soil 2) Pockets of wetness, either a clump of wet clay, or wet sand Perlite helps to create "air pockets" and fast drainage of water so canes don't rot in rooting roses. In OUTSIDE garden, can't use perlite (it decompose & flatten out), but pine-bark-mulch in planting hole is FANTASTIC for fast-drainage, and help tremendously with winter-survival: prevents feeder-roots from being frozen & destroyed. Digging roses up from Dec. 26 to Jan 1, at 40 to 37 F, here's what I notice: Dee-lish bought end of June is green to the tip, with green leaves, the soil below is made fluffy with pine-bark mulch, drains very fast, upper soil is alkaline clay to retain moisture. Same with W.S. 2000 with green & healthy leaves this Jan: excellent drainage dug down to 3 feet. While digging up Comte (grafted-on-multiflora), I notice where I mixed sand with clay: it's frozen into solid-ice. But where I have gypsum and pine-bark mixed it .. that PREVENTED SOIL FROM BEING FROZEN. I once spent 1 hour researching on whether potassium fertilizer helps with winter-survival: some site said it helps, other studies showed it did not. With my own eyes, my verdict is "No". Where I put high-potassium cocoa mulch: it's frozen solid at 40 F, same with soil below high-potassium red-lava-rock. But high calcium, esp. gypsum helps to keep soil fluffy, thus prevent roots from being frozen solid. I used gritty lime to de-ice my front-walkway, and it worked great in the winter. There are studies that backed this. CONCLUSION: Digging deep for drainage, plus make soil fluffy with gypsum & pine-bark-mulch helps with winter survival: leaves are still green & lush as OWN-ROOTS despite previous weeks of -10 to -13 below zero. Hi Cori Ann, here is a link to the website. It's in Ireland, but I was able to buy the globes from a US site Cutting Globes. I haven't done anything yet, I was distracted by the stupid cold spell and protecting my roses from 22 degree weather. But most came through it fine, My Fortuniana has buds, so I think I'll try to do some regular cuttings after it finishes, that is supposed to be the best time. What my goal is is to take some of my existing roses that I love and may not be in commerce anymore and bud them on fortuniana. I am beginning to like that rootstock much better than Dr. Huey. I also want to do some hybridizing, so I will have to learn how to do cuttings if I want copies of any successful crosses I do. I have a bunch of those band pots, so I will gather them up and try to get them to root. I have a good spot in my yard that is shaded and I can hopefully get some success along with the cutting globes.
