Tea 'Mlle. la Comtesse de Leusse'

I occasionally sweetly torture myself by looking at photos of Tea roses that are sold in Europe, that are not available in North America. This beauty caught my eye at helpmefind.com which shows several photos of it. The blossoms shade into a deeper pink than many Tea roses, and it opens to show a gazillion petals. Roseraie du Desert sells it in France.

Does anyone who posts here grow it? Melissa? Maurizio?

Is it healthy and fragrant? I dream that someone might import it during my lifetime..

I do the same, looking at roses only available in the US. Moores and Buck roses, in particular. Frustrating, isn't it?

Same here. As I scroll down HMF's list of teas, occasionally one will catch my breath, and I'll think how have I missed this rose? Then I see why. Dang! Only sold in Europe. For sure they've got some beauties that we don't have. Noisettes, too.

Carla--it sounds like MC gets quite large. That is good to know, thank you. How old is your MC? Jeri--You were quite correct. I was referring to MdS the Tea, not Colonial White. Thanks for the info. How old is your MdS? I am hoping that at least one of these Teas will be happy around 5 feet (approximately). It is very hard to resist all these wonderful Teas that Vintage offers. The problem is that I do not have a very large garden, so I am trying to fit them in where I can.

Well, okay, but not much to see on any of my Bourbons right now this year, it being a year when, as they often do, especially younger plants, the first flush balled and mildewed profusely due to the weather, not to mention a lot of mildewed leaves . Later flushes and leaves, when it is hot and dry, will be better, which is why I still grow them -- I resisted growing any of this class for a long time because of this tendency of theirs, then found they got better as plants got more established, on top of loving the blooms enough to put up with these initial disappointments. And, this is only the start of the third year in the ground for this plant, so it is still gaining strength and developing. When it blooms better, later in the season, I'll post more photos. (Note the new basal with a ton of buds, in front-left -- I'm finding this variety to be a strong grower.)

I never did the bud snipping, Ingrid, and most of the plants seem to do fine. The pattern seems to be that they do bloom while small, then take a while to grow more mature basals. Would the basals have come sooner if they hadn't bloomed? I really don't know. My slowest include Devoniensis which had a cane torn off by the wind and really did not grow the rest of last Summer. Souv d un Ami had a new basal frozen and did not make another one last Summer. So, injury hasn't helped. Jesse Hildreth looks full and lush this Spring and is not a slow one. A couple that sat a little longer with less growth were Clementina Carbonieri, and Comtesse Festectics Hamilton. They did not particularly waste energy blooming while young, they more just sat there. Now that you mention it, it seemed like the ones that sat there had bloomed less rather than more.

Vintage is going to be importing roses from this company including tea roses. They can be purchased some time in December but will not be available for shipment until 2013. It would be wonderful if this rose were among them. I haven't seen any tea roses here that look similar to this one except perhaps Mrs. B.R. Cant, but this rose is really spectacular.

I missed that one:-). I am also waiting for the December Teas from Vintage! I have my sights set on Isabella Ducrot. I hope they will import it. I see Marie Ducher and Beaute de l'Europe went custom-root on Vintage website, which means there are a few people who won't have to sweetly torture themselves for much longer:-)

Inspired by hearing that Vintage will be importing from Roseraie du Desert, I went to the RdD site, looked through all the teas and Chinas (that had photographs) and made a short of list of ones I'd love to get in my already full garden. Still, it was fun, although a bit torturous. MlCdL is on my short list, btw. I hope they make us both happy.

I'd also love to hear from those in Europe who grow some of the teas from RdD, and who would comment on how they perform in the garden. A pretty picture on a website is one thing. A rock star in the garden is another.
