book: "Empress of the Garden"

I just got this book for Christmas - it is by Michael Shoup, of the Antique Rose Emporium. It is about old roses, mostly ones that like warm climates. It is gorgeous. I started reading it right in the middle of a 9 person Christmas dinner party that I and my DH were hosting! - I had to force myself to put it down, although I kept sneaking peeks at it. Got the house all cleaned up this morning, so I am going to spend the rest of the day with it prior to going to another family Christmas dinner. Those of you who garden in warm climates might like to take a look at it - but be ware if you have something important to do - it might not get done!

Boncrow thats great news about your Peggy Martin! I'm becoming more and more excited about getting her. I've read she gives a great full flush early on but that it lasts quite a while, so I'm good with that, and it will be a treat if she gives me a few blooms here and there later on. Jay thats great to hear the book has alot of full bush shots as I often have problems finding alot of full bush shots online when making a decision on a selection. I've purchased a few roses over the last few years for thier bloom, and am disappointed with their growth pattern. I'm trying to avoid that going forward. Its alot of work planting a rose in my heavy red clay, so once its planted its staying!

I am in Santa Barbara, but west facing and below the pass, so we get some wind that blows out fog pretty well. All of those roses are where they get some shade from a picket fence on a hot hillside. BUT having just returned from San Jose Heritage Rose Garden...WE need a spring weekend in the garden for the SoCal garden webbers. It would be fun to meet and drive up, spend a Saturday in the garden, a Sunday rechecking what we discovered and head back. I looked at a lot of the Damasks just because of this thread and noticed that some looked good, some okay and others really good. It would be worth looking and seeing them. Some did have some crud, but it was on the older leaves. I guess crud on older leaves does not bother me since they are old leaves anyway. I loved their Portland from Glendora and look forward to putting mine in the ground, it is still in a 3g pot.

Campanula, I ordered from tuincentrum lottum too ( I must send email, when they will be sending orders). If you want Petrovic roses, you can order it on this website, but you must translate page to English first : http://www.vrtnicekodele.si/ I know the owner and she told me, that sometimes she sends rose orders to other EU countries (but I do not know about UK). She arranges all required legal papers for import from Serbia to EU. Melissa, I first ordered from PetroviÃÂ last year. Mostly OGRs and some Austins. I ordered bourbons, hyb. perpetuals and teas. In our country there are many rose lovers, who have PetroviÃÂ roses for some years now and his roses are highly praised. Campanula, I ordered roses from UK last year (Peter Beales) and they were travelling for almost two weeks. When I finally received them, they were not in best condition, but despite this, they are growing pretty well. This year I ordered from Trevor White. is the title of the book --

He's refering to "The Rose," collectively, as being the "Empress Of The Garden."

The photos are amazing - old roses growing up structures, up buildings, mounding by themselves. It is inspirational to see roses that I have in my garden doing such astounding things! Always looking romantic, and lovely. This book would brighten anyone's day.

This is one of those rose books that I call inspiring. I love the beautiful photos. I bought mine from the Antique Rose Emporium's web site. For such a big lavish book I thought the price was pretty reasonable.

I'm ordering mine today. It looks beautiful. I just got as a Xmas present "Roses" by Peter Harkness. Interesting but a small book with the tiniest print that I can barely see even in strong light. I might have to get stronger reading glasses just for this book!

I visited the Antique Rose Emporium in early November and got one for myself and a rose loving friend for Christmas. As tired as I was after all the Christmas hoopla last night, I had to read it for a bit before I passed out from exhaustion. Now that all the Christmas rush is over...I can start thinking about gardening again! This book is a delight for anyone who loves roses. There are others too by Wm. Welch - Roses for a Southern Garden, and a few more that are similiar to this. I loved seeing a chapter on the Pioneer roses. I adore these and hope that they will become better known. The little Noisette book by the Charlestown society is wonderful too.
