What to do with Garlic?

I'm interested in planting a few bulbs this year. From what I've read between Oct and Nov is a good time. But nothing is said about watering or care of the garlic during the winter. Do I water it regularly, fertilize it? Or do you wait until springtime? I read to keep it in about an inch of water between May and July, but that is the only care I've heard about. Please help!

Megan, I planted around 700 bulbs of garlic this year already. I planted on sept.27. Just make sure soil is good and loose,about 8 inches deep.Plant 3 to 4 inches apart and about 3 inches deep. Last year I put a little white lime along each row but,it did'nt seem to help any. You can put a layer of grass clippings or straw in between rows. You can water them in a little when you plant. I have nevered watered in the winter.Just let mother nture take over until spring. In the spring you can put 10-10-10 down and rake it in then water. You can use 10-10-10- every 3 or 4 weeks. I would'nt water to much.Just keep the weeds out. When it forms the seed pods on top in or around the end of july,snip those off and wait a couple of weeks then pull hang, and let dry.I hope this helps.

Plant anytime between now and christmas . I don't know what part of tx you are in but if you have mild winters the garlic may grow all winter so water may be needed if you are dry. Garlic in Tx should be ready to harvest in June and the scapes "seed pods " should appear in May . So stop watering late may . If you use organic fertilizer it is slow release and side dressing may not be necessary in the spring.

In 25 years of growing elephant garlic, I have never seen the flowers produce seeds, so I say ignore that comment - just won't happen. Although I cut and eat most of the scapes from my elephant garlic, I always leave a number of them because I like seeing the tall flowers around my garden. You definitely need to dig it up once leaves are yellowing (I usually let about half the plant yellow), and definitely dig from under the garlic to recover all the corms (hard cloves growing around the outside of each bulb) that you can for replanting. That is a really good way to significantly increase your stock of garlic, though it takes a couple of years before they make nice heads. I always store the garlic in a cool place (essentially in the house with AC) once it is dry and cured a bit, and I wait until the fall, mid-October here in Z7, to replant. The great thing about elephant garlic is that it lasts through the winter very well.

Well, thank you everyone for your responses. I started pulling some up yesterday and it indeed was ready. Some were planted to close together to form a sizeable head, but that's what you get when you let your kids plant with you. I did get a few rounds, I may plant them again, or just use them as garlic onions. Upon pulling them out I realized that had I left them in till the end of June or July like I was going to, the wrappers would have rotted away. This is only my second year growing garlic and believe it or not, I didn't look anything up about growing it, I just put it in and my Grandma told me what to look for when it's ready and that was it. It seemed very easy. It wasn't till all the reading and research did I start to get worried this year, I guess ignorance really is bliss. The one thing I learned for sure is I think I will stick with the hardnecks, if they do well in California. I've already prepared a site for the fall garlic that won't take up any of my precious tomato space next year. That was the only hard thing about growing garlic, trying to decide where to plant it since it's going to be in for a while, but I'm all set now! Thank you again to everyone who helped me, and I look forward to many more years of garlic growing.

You might want to braid the softnecks so you can hang them. In your case, you will need to clean them up. I clean and remove roots and excess foliage before drying/curing. Haven't had any problems with that method yet. Same for the hardnecks, except that you cut off the cane a couple of inches above the tops of the cloves and store them in mesh onion or citrus bags. I store them in my second bathroom (in the shower stall, actually) which is only used occasionally for guests and has no outside windows and is not particularly damp. If we do have a run of damp weather (such as right now) I will put a small fan in that room to keep the air moving. Right now, the softnecks are done and hanging in the BR and the hardnecks were taken on the 4th and are hanging on their new rack in the "sewing room." As far as the heat in your home, I don't know how to help you with that. Up here we worry about being warm enough all year long.

I too eat them straight from the jar, delicious! If you don't like to eat them plain, put them in a salad, baked ziti, or Johnny Musseti(sp?). My husband Wayne makes a awesome tasting olive bread. I wonder if they could be used in that also. He usually puts 3 different olives in it but ones that don't have a stuffing in them. Hmmmmm, have to give that a try. Mix them with other olives and heat just til warm with a little olive oil. Don't let them just sit in the pantry! Use them up. NancyLouise

Colorado is very dry, so last winter I would water occasionally, but only if it was very dry for several days in a row, and the weather was warm enough to allow watering.
