Will this work for green chile?

I like hot green chilies. Those tiny ones. So what I did is, I had some red dried hot chilies, I took the seeds out, they looked dry, I planted them in milk jugs like you would winter sow your other stuff and instead of putting it outside, I put it my basement, the reason I am doing this is because chilies need atleast 65F to germinate and outside is still not warm and somedays it is going in 35s and night temperatures are still in low 30s.

I'm hoping that this winter sowing method will keep it warm and moist. What do you guys think? will this work? or should I put the milk jugs outside so when sun ray hits, it will be hotter than what it would be inside the basement?

About 10 more degrees would bring on better germination of most peppers, 65 barely warm enough. They need light and lots of it immediately after germinating to do well - what are you going to do when they start to sprout? If you've encouraged earlier germination by sowing them indoors, they will have sprouted sooner than your outside conditions apparently allow and will need to be hardened off before you can take them out, leave them out.

If you don't have a light setup in your basement for growing indoors, I wonder if it wouldn't work better if you sowed outside and had to be patient, let them germinate when conditions outside trigger sprouting.

The tops to containers indoors will work to keep things moist, not necessarily warmer. Unfortunately unlike outside, covered containers (no circulation) indoors after germination can easily lead to damp off of seedlings.

You raise some very good points. Yes you are correct basement is quite moderate in temperature even though it is consistent. I do have grow light setup in basement so I was thinking about growing it under light for few more weeks and by then the outside will warm up and I can start hardening it off.

The above para raises some very good points. I might be better off putting it outside. You didn't say anything with regards to the way I took seeds...that means you don't think getting seeds out of dried/riped hot pepper is not a problem??

I made it exactly by the recipe, including the cloves. I saved out enough of the batch for supper that night and processed the rest (a full canner load). I had never used the dried beans (rehydrated per the recipe) before, and thought they tasted rather bland in the unprocessed supper batch of chili. I was pleasantly surprised when I opened one of the processed jars--the flavors and texture were much improved and matured by the pressure canning. If you do a taste test prior to processing and are thinking of adjusting the seasonings--I would wait. You can always adjust seasonings after opening the jars, but you can't take it back once you put it in! I've heard that cloves can give a strong taste in canning, but this is a small amount in the recipe. It does NOT give it a clove taste, and after tasting it, I doubt I could even identify that it had cloves in it. On the other hand, when I make this again, I won't leave it out because the whole recipe works as-is. I hope you like it as much as I did. Jill

Actually a bit of acid )citric, vinegar, etc.) can reinforce the heat a little. Ever eaten a raw pepperoncini? These are those little thin green pickled peppers you see at salad bars. I grew many (huge amount from a single plant!!). Tasted raw, and un-pickled they were only ho hum. Once in a brine a week later, the heat was very noticable, and was not the same plain Jane pepper anymore. That may be the main reason they are not usually found as fresh produce, because people get a dissapointment once they chew a few.. The Food Saver machine is made by the same company as all the other heat sealers sold now (Seal a Meal, etc.) now, and they also own Ball company. Jarden is their main name. I like the sealers for meats and for quick prepared meals like meat pies that are made fresh and packed in the vacuum bags. Most items last a year or longer in a decent freezer, and because the plastic material is very thick with two types of plastics, its also not as 'breathable', which causes flavor loss. Zip Lock for the freezer stuff cant even come close to the same freezer protecion. If freezing the peppers, destem, and deseed. Cut into halves at least, so there are no big air pockets inside. Set the sealing machine vacuum to high, and the rest is history..

Yes..the canned peppers are anaheims. After you pick them, roast them, seed and peel them and freeze them in a good freezer bag. I simply take them out of the freezer and chop off what I need with a very large strong knife. It works great and I still have about 4 pounds in my freezer from last year. The easy way to roast them is to put them on a tray and put them in the oven on broil until the top is black, them turn them over and repeat. Take them out of the oven and put them in a plastic bag for about 10 minutes. They should peel fairly easy that way.

It depends on how the peppers were dried. Sometimes they are dried with high heat and will no longer be viable. You could start your seeds using the baggie method and you'll be able to see it they are viable within a week or so.
I got seeds last year from a bag of dried japones from the produce section of Walmart and they sprouted just fine. And, I have sprouted seed from peppers that I've grown and hung up to dry(leaving them hanging for months sometimes). Maybe try a few different ways of starting and see which works the best for you. JMO
