large mushroom growing from a sugar maple tree

It's growing about 20 feet above the ground from where a limb was pruned about 10 years ago. Also the bark at the base of tree is starting to separate from the tree in large pieces. I'm used to the tree shedding bark, but this seems unusual. I'm not sure if the two things are related.

Sounds like there's a good chance your tree is in pretty serious trouble. Pictures might help verify this. If the tree would endanger people, a house, or other property if it fell, I'd recommend getting and ISA certified arborist out to take a look or having the tree removed.

The tree is not on our property. It's on the parkway. I'll probably have to call the village.

Just last year the village removed a maple tree in front of our house when they were doing work on the sewer. That tree was in perfect health. This tree has had issues since it suffered some damage during a thunderstorm a few years ago.

If you can't get stratified seeds now you might as well wait until late summer/early fall and plant this year's crop. Maples are said to come up much more readily if planted will still green and soft rather than after the seeds become brown and hard. If you have access to sugar maple trees you can gather from yourself, watch for the fruits to have become fully developed, then gather and plant your own before they harden.

Although Sugar maples are native in TN, if you bought a generic, non named tree, you have no way of knowing if its seed came from TN, or somewhere like Ohio or Vermonet....seed provenance matters. It might do better over time simply by having a more extensive root system, but in your zone you are better off with either verifiable TN seed source, or a named variety like Legacy or the Caddo types that tolerate hot summers better.

where are you.. and how bad was winter ... and whats that weird looking stuff near the soil line?? ... how big was it 3 years ago .. and who planted it.. and how??? .. and how did it get to your house??? and can we presume there are no apparent wounds just above the dead part??? there is no real reason .. a tree needs a single leader ... the rest of the tree sure looks OK ... its probably late enough... to not really suggest you need to give it more time ... just figure out how to get up there.. and cut out the dead part ... remove all the hanging weight.. before you go in for the surgical cut ... ken

Growing flowers underneath a large maple tree

I have had very good success growing flowering plants under a 60 year old Maple. The catch is to have early bloomers for before the tree leafs out. Early Azaleas and Early Forsythia , crocuses and squills come to mind at first. From there, I have Comfrey, Hosta and bleeding heart growing quite well later in the year. Of course the perennial Dusty miller and the annual Impatiens. The shadows in my yard limit the north bed to about 2 hours a day of sunlight later in the year where I have daffodils, tulips, turtle head, hellebore, and Solomon's song (?). For larger plants: Lilacs, wisteria, Azaleas, both early and late Azaleas, and Early Forsythia, Sedum, and Epimidium I forget which one), The only problem I have now is that the roots prevent my digging them in.

That's a public safety hazard. The Parks Dept usu has the forestry unit & I'm sure they'll appreciate the call.

Not if you get the name and date/time you called. It is harder to ignore a phone call than an e-mail. This is a public safety issue and most places respond quickly, as they don't like lawsuits.

I have done a lot of warning about dangerous trees. I have found that individual property owners usually take action. The tree department in D.C. never heeded any of my warnings. One tree I warned them about was a really large sugar maple growing in the Georgetown section. It had some ugly fungal fruiting bodies coming out of the base. Within a year or two it crashed down. I did not see the immediate result. I don't think any of the buildings were damaged, but I bet a lot of cars parked on the street were destroyed.

Do what you can to alert the proper authorities, and maybe the homeowners on the street. You may save a life and/or some valuable property.
