Xeric gardening 101 help - Agave

Dear Friends,
If I have posted on a wrong forum please pardon the post.
I cant seem to find Xeric gardening so thought I would try my luck here.
I have been successful for over 15 years in growing Hardy Bananas and Palms in my area but this past winter did me in with the palms since I dont use heat.
Im wanting to establish a Xeric garden.

Id like to centerpiece the xeric bed with a Saw Palmetto (Serenoa repens) palm (z8) and go from there, Im sure keeping it dry in winter would be of little help without heat so Im thinking a wrap of Christmas mini-lights.
many people in the eastern states are successful in overwintering tropicals with a wrap of lights on cold events.
Agave would be the best bet next! Does anyone have any tried and true survivors (with protection of course) in the agave form?
By next spring I should have it all planned out!
(I will be adding Yucca .elata (does great here) and native Prickly Pear)
Perhaps that should be the extent of it for now but Ice Plants have always been tempting but not sure if it could survive here.
Thanks for any advice
