Thanks Dax! Wish I could take credit for it ;-) Hortster, you bring up a good very good point about where precisely rooting will take place. It does make me wonder if my potted tree was planted too deep after it was rooted or if the soil level could have actually been maintained as it was up potted (if it was even potted up since the roots on the flare could easily be traced all the way to the edge of the 2 gallon imprint). Two other thoughts: 1) I can't help but wonder if some of those roots on the "non-rooted" side could possible girdle the tree down the road. I have also seen some very nice pics of a tree (a deciduous magnolia) self root grafting. I think since it is actual root tissue down there, it should fuse if they ever press on each other. If it were actual trunk, then a SGR issue might well arise. 2) This thing was just about as good as it gets being potted stock originating from a large wholesale grower (Greenleaf). There were some roots that had begun to circle on the outside of the container but once teased out, they went straight and stayed that way. As some have stated in the past, this was fresh spring stock primed and ready to be planted. If this plant hung around in this 2 gallon pot all summer into fall growing roots in a circle, it would not have been quite so easy to straighten out and plant correctly. I got 4 of these babies from walmart this year. They are around 6 ft tall and 2-3ft long leaves. I am not really concerned as I would simply dig them up and even cut the foliage. I had smaller variety last year and dug them up with some roots, cut all the foliage and potted them back. This year I am simply going to dig them up with or without roots and leave them in basement. I have way too many of these. I went to Korean grocery store and bought Malanga and other varieties for a fraction of cost (approx $1). Even in a worse case scenario, I can start from scratch if I loose these. But I think it will make it in the basement with or without roots. Ajay

tlbean2004, I totally know what you mean, I make some strange posts out of boredom, or wanting a totally new point of view. I agree with the genetics answer, but, I have seen more American hollies with 3-4 trunks than single trunks, but the shape is the same, anyhow. I will mention though, that sometimes trees do seem to take on a different growth pattern, or at least seem to in youth. I have 2 Quercus Robur (English oak) trees I started from seed (acorn) from the same tree. One is short and has wildly growing branches and a "general dissarray" of growth. The other acorn brought forth a tree that is more upright, and nearly 3X the height of the "general dissarray" seedling. This taller tree is very balanced and near perfectly formed oak, shaped tree. In the distant future, maybe they will look more the same, but now there is a real noticable difference. On a funnier comparison, I don't watch the Kardashians, but anyone could notice, nobody but Kim has that kinda tushie. It was a random genetic thing, it coulda came from her great grama, who knows. I don't see any other girls in the family sportin that much junk in the trunk. poaky1

Apricots are supposed to grow fine in rocky ground, so that's good! I don't know if that applies to to dwarfing rootstock, though. If you've hit soil in the bottom of the hole, I think you'll be fine either way, as long as the drainage is good. I don't think the rock 'walls' will hurt a thing, except maybe needing watering more often than if all that were also soil.
