What is your favorite and least favorite flower to grow?
Comments (9)mla20fus, my favorite flowers are perennials, so I don't have to plant them every year. I also love Holihocks, (sorry, every plant needs loved by someone :),especially by an old outhouse or shed. I plant very few annuals, but I truely love breadseed poppy, especially the bright red ones. They bloom with the Shasta Daisy and really make a show. The daisies were all volunteer, but now that I know how they look with my poppies, they can stay. I also plant gypsoia (sp?) and moss rose every year, they too are worth the effort. Are your fall Asters the deep purple ones?...See MoreWhat is YOUR Favorite (and least favorite) Lettuce?
Comments (8)I'm growing greens in large stock tanks this year on a deck, so can get some free from slug and vole predations for the first time. The lettuces are perhaps too crowded to form big heads, the arugula and the baby bok choy is bolting. An unusual green I'm enjoying is Brassica juncea, Ruby Streak and Golden Frill, from Evergreen seeds. The Ruby Streak is bolting, but the Golden Frill is larger and not bolting yet. It is making long leaves with lots of frill, finely divided, so it is quite crisp, yet still tender. I'm going to have to keep trying on the lettuce. I've found that some greens like Wild Red Kale, and turnips left in the ground for spring greens, need to be planted by July 15 in order to get large enough to make it through the winter. I had some excellent bok choy one year planted in the fall, but can't seem to duplicate it. It won't make it during the winter, though. A wild green I enjoyed up until frost last year and in early spring this year is Sheep Sorrel, for a sour lemony taste....See MoreWhat Do You Put in Your China Cabinet, Other Than China?
Comments (14)We used the top half of the china cabinet I inherited in the library of our former house. I had a plain box base made to hold it, stained it to the same color, and put it behind the small end of an L-shaped sofa, because with its own base, it was too tall to fit in our 8' rooms. It actually started life as a secretary-bookcase, but my great-grandfather, who bought it at auction, only bought the top half, and had a nice but distinctly inferior bottom made for it then. I've tried to find the other half, but with no success. Sigh. So much for its potential value. But I digress ... I put a few groups of nice old books, a couple of pewter pitchers, a plate or two, and some other attractive things in it. I also lined the back wall with a piece of cream jacquard fabric to lighten the whole business. Not sure how well you can see, but here it was: It was traditional in old houses to line the doors of large secretary-bookcases like this one with gathered green cloth to protect the books from sunlight, so you'd be in good company if you decided to put fabric in yours....See MoreWhat is your favorite commercial? Least favorite?
Comments (47)Guess I'm just not watching as much TV anymore but I haven't seen many of these. Don't have a favorite at least that's been broadcast in recent history. 20+ years ago there were some really good commercials on TV and radio too for that matter but now it's mute or change channels. Least favorite: Political ads, that asinine St. Jude's commercial when mommy goes "I'M SCARED TOO!" (but at least it seems they pulled that - there's a different one now), any feminine "freshness" or the Viva Viagra commercials. (Elvis must be spinning in his grave... unless they gave him a Cialis when he died.) And I don't give a hoot about "Little" Jimmy's Johnson, sheesh. Even Terry Bradshaw wouldn't do that commercial. I want to say grow up but there'd be an unintended pun there. At least now there's a good reason for weight gain. Going to get snacks during commercials. Bring back the cigarette commercials. They were creative and entertaining at least. Frank Bartles and Ed Jaymes, we need you now more than ever though the Betty White & Abe Vigoda Snickers commercial is not bad....See MoreUser
