Why don't all nurseries have the SAME tree hardiness zone info?
Comments (17)that wasnt my point .... the point was that stuff happens.. even with stock that is thought to be reliable in any given zone ... mother nature really lacks a sense of humor when she has a bee in her bonnet ... to mix a bunch of metaphors .... most wont care about a z4 in my example.. it just wont matter... but something though secure.. might not make it ... and its usually the one i prize most ... lol anyway .... i recall once.. discussing this with a very large wholesaler.. complaining about another supplier.. and wondering why the bad labels .. like you ... and his best guess was that supplier A ... had a quarter million tags printed up so many years ago .. and they will be damned.. if they arent going to use them up.. before they print another batch .... and i bet some of this is behind bigboxstore labeling problems ... all speculation.. who knows ... ken...See MoreWhy doesn't every nursery in the country sell.....
Comments (109)What a wonderful plant! I adore red and would get it in a heartbeat even though I am on the edge of it's hardiness zone like NHBabs. Babs did you end up getting one? If so would you give your experience with it....See MoreWhy not just buy from the nursery?
Comments (44)I rarely have to special order. Between rose society raffles, auctions, nurseries and bulk mini orders for society fund-raisers, I've got roses out the ying-yang. I don't buy roses at Lowe's or HD. I can get better specimens at lower prices from my favorite nursery that orders in some 7000 bareroots every year. A couple miles from that nursery is ANOTHER nursery carrying about 7000 bareroots. Now that's my idea of a weekend gettaway. No husband or kids gonna volunteer for that kind of shopping. The owners of these nurseries also grow roses and they'll special order batches for us upon request when we guarantee the sale. The selection of OGR's is pretty dismal but I throw an order in with other rosarians and share the shipping charges. My biggest problem with mail-order is that some of them won't ship during winter and my bareroot season is January. Anything after Feb 15 better be fully leafed out before March 15th as it can be 100F before month-end. Sure get jealous when I see all these great offers on all these beautiful roses during July....See More7 weeks and still tiny seedlings! Why won't they grow?
Comments (14)Ralph, I am battling a similar problem to you this year. I have plants that are nearly three months old and only about three inches or so tall. Several of them died early on and the ones that survived just have not thrived. I used MG orchid mix which worked good for me last year...plastic starter pots and definitely did not over water. If anything, I think I damaged them from underwatering. They were in severe wilt mode several times before I watered them and I think that essentially killed off some of their root structure. I have already repotted them once and the root structure was less than optimimal. But as suggested above, I would guess your problem is partially a nutrient problem but more likely an over watering problem. I just went to the other extreme. Repotting in a better soil in plastic and less watering will likely help a lot. But, do what I did and go out and purchase some starters from a garden center and then you don't have to stress out if your seedlings never turn around. I hate the idea of buying plants after going through three months of growing my own but, hey, some times you just have to bite the bullet. Bruce....See MoreUser
