Mrs. B.R. Cant Rocks!

She's been a bitty little plant for some time although very healthy and happy-looking, and put out buds even when she was about 10 inches tall. She's now 17 inches tall at her highest cane and put out a flower that is 4 1/2 inches across and gorgeous! And, she has another three or four buds that I think will still open, especially since it's supposed to be over 80 degrees on Sunday. I can't even begin to imagine what a show stopper she'll be at six feet or more. What modern rose could possibly equal the beauty of the bush and leaves and those gorgeous flowers? This is a rose that will invite me to visit her over and over again.

She is GORGEOUS. I had her at my old house and loved her. I miss her so much!! Post pictures, please!!!

Ingrid, have you ever seen Malcolm Manners ring of Mrs. B.R. Cant at his University garden?

It is beautiful, and will continue to grow and become more beautiful.

Mrs. B.R. Cant can easily grow over 6 ft. here, and be just at wide, and we are much colder here than in Calif. Sadly, she is rather tender, but for most years, she is awesome.

Wow, that photo of TIC is beautiful. I am most tempted to go for that one after that pic. I think I will cross out Mrs Dudley Cross for now. I've ordered a whole lot of modern(mostly austins and climbers) and old roses from 3 different nurseries and I'm trying to be good and only add one more to this list. But I'm seriously tempted to add B R Cant as well. I will post on the antique roses forum as well and count the votes for each one! Thanks everyone for your input. Sanju

I don't personally have G. Nabonnand, but have heard many people on the forum say good things about it. If you're really interested, you might write a separate post and get reactions from people who actually grow it. Well, I hope Malcolm and all you Mrs. B.R. Cant lovers out there are happy. After having sworn over and over again that I would not buy another rose (and being really sincere about it), the thought of not having "the world's greatest rose" simply would not leave me alone. Over the last few days I've studied my place endlessly, searching for a large flat spot to hold this rose, and there simply was none that had any sun. This morning I had a Eureka! moment as I stood outside the house and looked down the driveway. It's very long and the terrain along it is hilly, but more than halfway down there is a flat spot where what we call the studio is located. About 20 feet away from the studio I found my spot for this rose! It just hadn't occurred to me to plant roses that far from the house but there is a water connection there and a huge rose like that would be a wonderful introduction to the roses around the house that aren't visible until you go around a curve on the driveway. Sanju, it just goes to show where there's a will there's a way. I need another rose like I need three eyes in my head but I've become convinced I have nothing quite like THIS rose in my garden. jasminerose, what a lovely thing to say. I think those of us who grow roses, and perhaps especially those who are passionate about old roses, understand and foster each others' need to find out as much as we can about our favorite plants. I also have another great interest, which is collecting antique Chinese porcelain, and that group is equally crazy, if not more so, about that, and everything is discussed endlessly, members' new finds are posted, with many pictures from all angles, and determining the age is only a starting point (is it really antique, modern copy, truly 18th century or a reproduction from the 19th century, and so on). It actually makes antique roses look like a walk in the park, but the beauty of the roses is that they're alive, and they grow and change, and often become more beautiful with maturity. I just can't imagine getting tired of having roses in my life, as frustrating and disappointing as they can sometimes be.

Its amazing, the things our chickens dig up lol..antique whiskey bottles, tarps, parachutes, eye glasses, plastic Big Bird Sesame Street and other dolls/characters. One would think we live on a landfill or something ( we don't, as far as I know). I just never know what suprises I'm gonna find when I go out there each morning. I wish we had a clothesline its good for linens etc. They are fine in photos as long as there are no 'unmentionables' hanging at the time lol :D I love your Mrs B.R Can't. Mine is only a few ft tall. I just finally put her in the ground last week and she seems so happy she's getting a nice new flush if leaves. I can't wait till she gets huge!

Sammy, I did see pictures of the ring of Mrs. B.R. Cant that you mentioned. It's quite spectacular. I remember from another post of Malcolm's that he is especially fond of this rose and thinks it's one of the best teas if not the best, and his comments finally convinced me to get one. I wish I'd done it much sooner but I'm very excited by mine and am already looking forward to its spring bloom very much.

I love mrs b.r. cant! I'm usually not drawn to pink flowers, but I bought mrs b.r. on clearance this spring and her performance and blooms have been outstanding. I'm really a fan of this rose- I just picked a nice bouquet about an hour ago.

My Mrs BR Cant is blooming like crazy right now with all the cooler weather. It is a great carefree rose with tremendous drought tolerance and lovely roses.

Ingrid, she has become my favorite. I don't think there has been a time this entire year that she hasn't had at least a few flowers on her. She's also doubled in size. I'm kicking myself for not taking a picture before our freezes that we've had, she was loaded with blooms! And the smell, oh my.

These pictures are before she grew so much this year, she's getting huge!

redbirds, what gorgeous pictures. I just love how huge the blooms are. It's simply a spectacular rose in every way. Can you please tell me what the lighter colored rose is? The two look great together. Thanks so much for these pictures.

That is Reve d'Or behind her, another great performer for me. I will try to get some more pictures of how big the Mrs has gotten. Oh and she is also a favorite cut flower of mine, she holds her petals pretty well.

Mine has been fabulous this fall! She looks a lot like Redbirds' plant. She just grows and grows and blooms and blooms! I'm going to replace an evergreen shrub in my back garden with her in Feb. The one in the front is still covered in leaves although I know they will be falling anyday now b/c we have had several below freezing nights lately. MBRC is my most perfect old rose for the southern garden!

I would be thrilled if Mrs. B.R. turned out to be a long-lasting cut rose. I have precious few of those in my garden of about 90 roses, and just a few blooms of her size would make quite a statement inside.

I agree. It's a winner. Mine is getting bigger and bigger, leaning on other roses, but so lovely. I'm glad it's doing well for you Ingrid.

Ingrid, I'm thinking/hoping that mine will really take off this spring/summer. I've been very pleased so far but she's really still a baby which is why I didn't comment earlier. The foliage is very black spot resistant; she's had a few spotty leaves but VERY FEW and has bloomed very well for being a 2 year old plant.

I've heard she can get HUGE but I'm hoping I can give mine a snip here and there and keep her to 7-8 X 7-8.

I, too, heard wonderful things about her on this forum but was afraid of the size until I took out a couple of things to make room. So far I'm glad I did.

I'm glad you're enjoying yours.

Up here 'Mrs. B. R.' couldn't and was removed. Even near a south wall. But your plant may be something different from what I was sold.

One of the "problems" with Mrs.B.R.'Can' ;-) is you 'Cant' bring yourself to cut her back because when approach to prune she always presents you with branches that are covered with tons of blooms or buds :-)

However, I noticed that ARE in San Antonio manages to keep one specimen a 6 by 6 size in their staggered row of teas with a winding trail between them, but you could see they had cut back a lot of pretty thick branches to do so. But she soon fills them in and looks nice.

What a rose -- perfectly healthy foliage and an almost continuous bloomer with large, full and fragrant flowers. My mother always cut them for the house and they seemed to last well in a vase.
