Need advice on helping tree seedlings survive the winter.

I have some little pawpaw and redbud trees that I started from seed this spring. The redbuds are about 5 inches tall at the moment, but the pawpaws only about 3 inches. What is the best way to protect them over the winter? I did think of leaving them in their pots and planting them temporarily in a protected place, so that I could dig them back up next spring without disturbing the roots. Do you think that would work? We have a lot of rodents around here, so I'm a little wary about burying things in mulch as is sometimes recommended.
