Moving Weeping Crab Apple and other trees

After growing some trees for several years I find they have outgrown their present location and need to be moved. Some dwarf lilacs are not as dwarf as we expected. I have found since, lilacs don't mind clay soil, which I have a lot of. How about crab apple. Right now it is in pretty good soil. Also dogwoods. Please advise!

when the leaves fall off.. or change color.. the plants are dormant above ... why stress them trying to keep leaves that are going to fall off otherwise ...

where in canada???

Crabapples and dogwoods can do wonderfully in clay as long as you have decent drainage. Is that all you are wanting to know?

there is a fruit and orchard forum.. if you dont get the answer here ... i gave up on fruit because of the spraying... a proper regimen would include one or two sprays before they leaf out.. and just about every week or two through the whole summer... frankly .. the cost of the chemicals alone.. dictates that you could buy more than you could possible ever want ... for less money than the chems ... all that said... you have fun doing whatever you want ... but be extremely safe ken

I have seen crabapples live for many years "looking ratty" with scab. I am one of those people that would cut it down and replant a resistant tree rather than messing with the annual detailed cleanup and spraying. If you do spray, it takes three applications per spring starting at blossom and being repeated at 7-10 day intervals. I've heard of neem oil being used for anthracnose and rust, but I'm not sure about scab. Maybe someone else can give an opinion on that. hortster

jkom, that's funny, my mother loved pickled pigs feet, and their similar product, pickled pigs knuckles. The person who taught her to eat them? My Aunt Amy, whose real name was Yoshiko and who came to the States with my Uncle Chuck, he met her and married her while he was in the service stationed in Japan. I always liked liver, although I seemed to be an oddity among my friends for it. I still like liver with bacon and onions, although I seldom eat it now on the advice on my doctor. Peppi, all of those things are also available here, and none are considered particularly odd. In fact, Jiffy muffin mix is made here in Michigan, and I've always got canned salmon, canned sardines and canned smoked oysters in the pantry. I don't particularly like the oysters, but Elery loves them. I don't really like headcheese much either, truthfully, but I can get it and I've eaten it. Ashley still likes the Mrs. Grass' chicken noodle soup in a box as well as the Vienna sausages in a can. So, although I'll eat liver and headcheese, I think "non-dairy creamer" is weird, how can it be creamer, but be non-diary? I haven't figured out yet what exactly Cool Whip is, but my brother eats it frozen, like ice cream. Annie

Yes, removing the pine, and maybe some other trees farther away. The big tree to the far right is about 12" in diameter, and I don't plan to cut that one down.

Hi Ken, I'm in east end of Toronto. Are you suggesting I move shrubs in the fall when they are dormant. This is certainly more involved compared to moving perennials. Since these are trees the root ball is much bigger.
Hello Brandon, thanks for replying. Yes, I'm concerned about planting crabapple and dogwood in clay. The drainage is good. I have a prunus cistena growing in there and also clematis durandi for six or seven years and both are doing well. If they are alright maybe the other trees and shrubs should as well.

If the soil they are currently in is substantially different than the new site, you may want to consider that when transplanting. You may not need to do anything different, but bare-rooting or partially bare-rooting might be recommened by some in some circumstances.
